Well, let's focus on getting you into a high success unit, and not worry too much about trophy quality. For deer, I'd be looking at a 4th season hunt. Unit 22 requires 6 points and unit 44 requires 8. Both have 5 year average success rates in the mid 80% range.
For elk, you have enough points to get into unit 76 in a couple different seasons, I'd go for 1st season, as the average success is close to 60%. Unit 61 averages slightly higher success in some seasons, but also takes an extra couple of points for a 1st season hunt.

At 6 points, I would probably continue to save. You have 8 points on deer and I would focus on a solid buck hunt, then a 2-4 years down the road start seeing what you could come up with 8-10 elk points, which would probably get you into a 61 first rifle season hunt as a resident.

I agree with some of the previous posts. Keep accumulating elk points and go OTC where there are high densities of elk, get that knife dirty. For Deer, Gunnison will be back, you aleady know that area a little,although I would prefer 54 and 55 for better bucks. I hunted deer the next year after the winter kill and shot a 177 and saw one larger the afternoon after I shot mine. Saw 11 bucks total, a lot of people reported not seeing any. Last year I saw less, but they were a little larger overall. I was just elk hunting. 2 or 3 more years and we should see some good improvements.
