Canned Hunts

I know a guy at work that bragged for months about hunting. To paraphrase Forrest Gump, he seemed to know everything there is to know about the hunting business. Personally, I found it annoying, especially since he was so condescending in his ignorance about hunting in Alaska.

Over the past few months, he hunted for moose, caribou, and even went on a guided grizzly hunt. Each time, he ran some poor soul all over the countryside at high speed and came home empty handed.

Now he's bragging to everybody he runs into about his buffalo hunt. But as it turns out, his "hunt" consisted of paying $3700 to a private ranch -- no hunting license required. They took him out to the herd in a pickup truck, told him which one he could shoot, and even told him when he could pull the trigger so as to not run the risk of hitting another animal. In the photo of him proudly posing with his bull next to his son you can see the rest of the herd right behind him.

What's amazing is that he's running around full of himself like this is some kind of a victory and proof of his manhood. Color me disgusted.

The part that disturbs me most is not that we've found something to agree on, but that this guy is parading this around giving hunters a bad name with people who don't understand what we do.

On a serious note on this issue, I do agree completely. Those kind of hunts really turn my stomach. I think I read of one place like that before where the owner told the client to be sure and hide when the saw the elk. Not because the elk would run away, but rather they'd come to them. That's how tame they were.

Thats not hunting. It's killing. HUGE difference as you all well know. Hunting is the whole esperience. Not knowing if you will succeed or fail. That's why it's a challenge and not a chore. If killing were all we wanted we could work in slaughterhouses and save the money and effort. The kill should be sacred and earned, not bought. Some of my most precious hunting memories are during my least succesfull hunts. Your pal should hang his head in shame expat. SoCo if the tame Elk story had happened to me I would have walked out on the hunt. Money or not . I'm sure most everyone here would as well.

Don't think I'm going to let you forget this anytime soon Pal! Now if you all will excuse me I need to do downstairs to the pit of hell and get some ice. The flying pigs have knocked out my refrigerator.

Speaking of shooting farm animals, check this out from Montana. Note the NY address on the tag.

The moons must be aligned because SoCo agrees with Expatriate and now I am going to disagree with the two of them.

I just heard the same story from a friend about his cousin hunting buffalo and the herd being in the background. His cousin got ribbed about.

Now, I wouldn't want to hunt or shoot a buffalo because there is no challenge in it. I like to push myself and to really hunt, but that is my preference. But my prefence may not be someone else's and as long as it is not illegal then so what. Let them kill an animal and think they are the greatest hunter out there.

I just got emailed a hunt by an outfitter and the first thing I said to myself was that it didn't seem challenging enough, but it does sound like a good experience. It is hunting in Alaska from a yacht for black bear. You take a boat and scan the shores for black bear and then do a short spot and stalk.

Doesn't sound like much of a challenge, but the experience of visiting Alaska, staying on a yacht for six days, running up and down the shore line looking for bear sounds like a whole lot of fun and memories.

I say let each person decide on the level of difficulty they want for their hunt and not be too judgemental. You never know the story behind the story so give them the benefit of the doubt.
