Can someone help with my 12 gauge...

I just got a universal gun cleaning kit. It did not come with any instructions. Can someone help? I have a Remington 870 express. What do I use from the kit?

it comes with:

3 piece brass rod

4 phosphor bronze brushes

3 slotted patch loops

2 spear pointed jags

shotgun adapter

25 absorbent patches

Are any of the brushes large enough to do 12 ga.? 12ga. is not hard to clean and doesn't need the level of clean a rifle would. I would just use the 12 ga. brush and get a 12 ga. swab. Use the swab to apply bore cleaner and then use the brush to scrub it clean. Use the swab to apply a thin coat of oil on the inside of the barrel. Just make sure you clean the brush immediately after you use it because some bore cleaners will affect the bristles. Truthfully, I have hardly ever chemically cleaned my 12 ga barrel unless it has rained and I'm getting the water out of it. I run a bore snake through it once and a while but it stays pretty clean between uses.

Get a rod specifically for shotguns. The rods that come in those universal cleaning kits are really for rifles and pistols and designed to rotate on their axis for engaging the lands/grooves in a rifle or pistol barrel. They are not as effective for smoth bore shotgun barrels. Shotgun cleaning rods do not rotate on their axis like pistol or rifle rods do. You want to be able to twist your rod and brush in the chamber, barrel, and choke of a shotgun, that way it is more effective in removing melted and burnt fouling. Use 12 ga bronze bore brushes only for the bore and chokes in the barrel. Get a 10 ga bronze bore brush for cleaning the chamber and forcing cone area. Don't use your bore brushes for anything else or for cleaning other parts of the gun, or you will flatten them and disfigure them and they will be useless for cleaning the bore later on. Just trust me, don't use a rifle cleaning rod in a shotgun unles you have nothing else available. In my experience rifle rods aren't that great for cleaning the bore of a shotgun barrel.

You also want to add to your cleaning equipment list these items:

-several 8"X8" clean cotton cloth ( laundered old T-shirts work very well)
-Canned high pressure air
-larger cotton flannel patches
-woodeden chopskicks (whittled to a chisel tip) for cleaning hard to reach areas
-Powder Free surgical gloves (keep solvent from soaking into your skin and bloodstream)
-Hard bristle toothbrush
-Pleanty of Q-Tips swaubs.
-Can of high pressure action cleaner/degreasre (use this to hose off the reciever and bolt assembly once they've been ceaned and scrubbed with solvent)
