Camo patterns

Hey everyone, well i think that i have narrowed down the areas in which i am going to hunt next year and i am starting to gather all of the thinks that i am going to need for my first DIY elk hunt. One of the things that i could use a little help on is which camouflage pattern works best out west, I'm leaning towards the mossy oak APX brush line. The area that i am going to be going to is right around the white river national forest, so any help or advice on this topic would be great. Thanks again for everyones input

I use Realtree AP, but dont get to hung up on camo paterns. Buy some windicater and watch the wind, use plenty of scent controll and dont be afraid to take a bath in the creek!!!!!!!!!!! if you want to get up in those elks personal zone. What you gonna do when a 300"+ bull is screaming in your face at close range and you heart is pounding so heard and you get a lump in your throat. Well shoot it of course Thumbs up

Agreed... Camo is the last thing you need to worry about out here for elk. Focus on hunting smart and you'll better your chances of success. Good luck.

It may sound silly, but I have to ask. Are you doing archery or rifle? The only reason I ask is because I've had some guys ask me (not on this forum, but in person) what the best camo is for Colorado elk, deer, etc and it turnes out they were doing rifle. If you're hunting rifle season it doesn't matter if you wear camo or not, the blaze orange requirments makes camo useless for it's purpose.

I also agree with the others about camo pattern not being that critical to elk hunts. Best to pay more attention to the wind, scent control, and your own movements. But, for archery it depends on the surroundings. Colorado terrain and vegitation varies a great deal, even often times it varies from one road side to the other. You have pine forests and aspen forest, and often mixed in with each other. Some of the open meadows int he high country are often not usually green during archery season either. Take a good look at the terrain and vegitation, then buy your camo.

I didn't even think to see what season you were inquiring about... I just assumed rifle. I would agree with western that it is substantially more important for archery. You're looking to get within 50 yards of the damn thing for Pete's sake. All my bow hunting has been with cheap bargain camo and I've gotten within bow range of elk in dark timber and deer in open sage country.

I don't really believe you have to go drop $100 on a camo shirt to kill something with a bow. But the only thing I've ever had success on with a bow was rabbits so maybe don't take my word as gospel. ha

Thanks for all the info guys, and although i know that camo is not that important but with all the time and money i have invested in this trip already, i just want to try to do what ever i can to up my odds for success. I will be hunting archery and i'm from out of state so i'm not all that familiar with the vegetation from one area to the next. Thanks again

Re: Camo patterns

More important than pattern is what the clothing is made out of. I like quiet, waterproof, lightweight synthetics and wool. Cotton kills with the way it absorbs moisture and will not insulate when wet. Oh and I've never owned any of that underarmor stuff, but people seem to like it. I still wear silks. Oh and good, thick socks with a liner sock.
