Calls?

1) I'd like to hear from all you that use calls when hunting bucks. Any opinions on a good call to purchase?

2) I was watching OLN last night, they had a couple shows with buck hunters using the "can". Some call that looks like a little can with holes in it, they'd flip it over and back up and it would make a sound like a doe calling. Anybody use this with success?

3) Anybody use rattle bags with success?

I'm going to try calls this year That can one and the grunt call haven't tried calls before either. The best way to get that monster into range is to fall asleep and light a cigarette never fails lol

I have tried the doe in heat can bleat and it brings in deer but I have never brought a lone buck in with it. Always a group of does followed by a buck. Hope this helps.

How long does it take for the deer to come in? do you just keep rolling the can or is there a pattern for it?

I don't have any real rules on the subject. I use it sparingly so as to not spook the deer and also turn the can half way to give shorter bleats.

I picked up the HS Hands Free True Talker, haven't tried it in the field yet but I like it so far, very easy to use. As far as frequency/pattern...I've heard use it about every 15-20 minutes.

yeah never just keep calling and calling give it a chance to take affect or the deer will most likely avoid the sound if its to frequent like the guy above me said use it about every 15 20 min its use it spearingly

I tried the doe bleat in a can this weekend the little one. It is still in the woods some where.

No you don't "just keep rolling the can" I use it when I'm out in early season, but it's only to get a doe "curious". It won't attract a buck until rut, it's pretty much a doe in heat bleat. So it's fairly useless early season. I have however called in does early season if they happen to be walking the wrong way, I'll give a bleat, and they'll turn around to see what's up. Arrowed 2 does that way. It hasn't worked on a buck yet, but only been using it 2 years. Grunts work about the same, get their attention to get them to come your way. But you don't want to be calling too often, it will only scare them. I call or rattle or use the can every 45 min. or so. Just some info from what I've seen in the field.

I gave the can a couple of rolls every half hour or so. didn't see a thing. Nobody saw a thing this weekend. Our party shot 9 deer opening week end so it was a total loss.

I tried using a bleating call this weekend when there were a whole bunch of does about to check their reaction. They looked up but didn't run. No bucks showed up though.

I agree with Milliondollarbear, either fall asleep (which is how I got my six-pointer this weekend) or light a cigarette---that always seems to bring in the antlered critters.
