BillyG, congrats! The tags out here are very coveted. I have never been drawn. That's a heck of a tag too.
I wish I could help you, but I mostly put in for the Tule elk hunts in the south central zones, near Owens Valley. Never put in for the Roosevelt elk draws.
I have not really seen many guys on here fromt he California area, other than one other guy from SoCal like me, and a hog and turkey expert from the central area. There is another site I frequent that is mainly California guys, and there are always 5-6 guys each year on that site that draw tags. They would definately have a better idea there.

Out here in Colorado, and in the units that I haunt, it is a tricky game to figure out how far to pack in on a rifle hunt. You want to get away from the masses that have moved game away from the roads but might want to stay close enough that you are taking advantage of the animals forced movements. There is no universal distance but I like the 1.5 to 4 mile range for day hunts where I am not planning on bivying out. This keeps you in that productive buffer zone where the animals are really...
