BillyG, congrats! The tags out here are very coveted. I have never been drawn. That's a heck of a tag too.
I wish I could help you, but I mostly put in for the Tule elk hunts in the south central zones, near Owens Valley. Never put in for the Roosevelt elk draws.
I have not really seen many guys on here fromt he California area, other than one other guy from SoCal like me, and a hog and turkey expert from the central area. There is another site I frequent that is mainly California guys, and there are always 5-6 guys each year on that site that draw tags. They would definately have a better idea there.
I won't post the link here, due to site etiquitte, but will shoot you a message. Other than that, you should stick around this site. Lots of great info! Welcome!!!
As I sit and glass, which is common for hunters out west, I have sort of quickly discovered something I never learned when I was younger.
In my youth I had enthusiasm and spirit. In my middle to advancing years I have creaky knees, arthritis, and I tire more easily than I used to. Where I used to sit on the cold hard ground I now look for that soft spot to sooth my tired muscles. That leads me to my tip.
Carry your soft spot with you!
In my pack I carry an air filled, ultralight, camping pad....
