I'm the other guy. Little testy are we?.... I said I'm not a fan, and you throw a hissy fit. Hey, first gun I had was an -06, but like I said, it's just ok at everything and not really a specialty caliber for anything. Besides, it is the base case for my favorite, the 35 Whelen... at least it's got that going for it, which is nice. To each his own, no need to get pissy b/c I disagree.

What do mean it's not a specialty caliber? The US Military took it. Took it over the .300 they were using too. Must say something for that cartridge.

What, are you saying it was a specialty gun for killing people? Didn't take them long to realize that it had too much kick for a semi and it's energy wasn't needed. It is better for black bear, white tail, mule deer, pronghorn, elk, kudu, etc., but there are several calibers that are more effective for each one of these critters and the several others that I didn't mention. Yes, it will work for them, but it's not the best at any.... maybe the military just settled because the 300 was too flat shooting or kicked too hard. Come on, your point is a little off basis here.

Caliber and Shot Placement

This will be my second hunt for bear. My first bear I shot in the neck. This was the prefered way in the camp. Now they are saying that to many animals have not been recovered due to the small vital area of the spine and one should take a lung shot. They have been leaving the animal until the next day if extended amount of tracking was required.

I am curious as to what the common shot placement is? I like the neck shot and feel confident with my ability and as to where the spine location is. Also I am going to use my 44 mag S&W this year. The first bear I shot was with a 444 Marlin. He dropped in his tracks. I am also a big bore advocate. The 444 did it's job well. I I owned a 45-70 that would be my choice. But I do like the 35's also. One can not go wronf with 250 gr at 25 to 40 yards in the 35 Whelen.

The solution to a good black bear cartridge is really very simple. Diameter and velocity. Small bears go down fairly easy but big bears don't so they need something that punches.
Unfortunately leaving a bear til next day usually results in lost meat. But that happens when theres little blood trail to follow--typical of smaller calibers and bullets that break up and don't exit.
A neck shot on a bear with a large caliber should put the bear down. A vitals shot, lung/heart with a small caliber often results in lost bears but a lung/heart shot with a large caliber with some velocity will also put the bear down.

I would say it is about controlling the emotions and SQUEEZING the trigger. I have a picture of a bear on my trail camera, and if Yes he comes in during the season I would rather err on the side of a larger caliber, 30-06 in my case, but that is part of the reason I use the 06 is because I can use it for both deer and bear. With all that being said; bullet placement should be the primary concern, it doesn't matter if your using an elephant gun, you need a good shot at the vitals.

Well speak for yourselves and Im not throwing a hissy or a pissy Im just stating the facts. Every bear Ive shot had been either a heart or lung and like I said before every bear went down one shot so tell me how you guys are saying they run when you lung em cause Ive seen one run about 5 feet and both lungs looked like jello (mushed) or there was no heart you tell me where a bears going to go with no heart or two lungs that have been disconnected from his body (not very far) and anyone thats bear hunting this year try out the 180gr shells and tell me what you think and come back and tell me if you needed anything bigger than that. I just dont think bigger grains equals more kills sorry but thats just me 180 is fine for any big game if your shooting for vitals. You have alot of time usually to make sure your bullet goes where you want it too go with bears so take your time and make it one shot instead of 3 to 5.

I agree with Sawbill, you can't put big boars in the same class as "average" bears. A big Black Bear boar is more like a Grizzley than a 130 pound bear of it's own kind. There are 400-500 pound black bear out there. These are the bears that get wounded and are never recovered, the hunter scratching his head wondering why his good old deer rifle failed him.
