yep

They send out these offers about once per quarter.  Just get on their mailing lista nd you'll get them every couple of months.  Like you I wait to make big purchases until the next good discount comes along

mailing list

Oh I'm on their mailing list.  Not a week goes by that I don't recieve at least a couple pieces of mail from them.  Sometimes I'll get as many 4 to 5 completely differnt catalogs from them in a week.  Even my wife wonders why they spend so much money on mailings rather than just throwing me a free shipping offer on any order once in a great while.  Some of you guys have complained about the NRA's junk mail being annoying.  Myself I don't have that problem with the NRA. For me Cabela's mail is much worse.

That is one thing I agree for

That is one thing I agree for sure. They waste a lot of money on catalogs. I have no use for the catalogs and they mostly go in the trash other than the hardcover one and that one just sits there and looks good.

I do all my shopping online or in store and just don't use the catalog.

Btw they are offering free shipping on orders over 150 for the next few days to everyone. They post a lot of these offers on the website about once a month.

Unfortunately that occasional offer of free shipping for orders over $150 doesn't help me out at all.  I rarely ever place an order from them that reach that much.  Typically my purchases from Cabelas have usually been for specific stuff.  Small batch orders for things I can't find elsewhere or don't want to spend gas and time searching for locally.  What gets me though is that Cabelas has always thought they could entice me to order by bombarding me with mass mailings of catalogs on a daily basis.  I see all their stuff, discounts, and products online via website.  I don't need but one main cataloge from them per year.  They spend on me what I can only imagine to be well over $50 to $100 in mailings a year.  My point is that it's far less expensive and more profitable for them to just just offer me free shipping on any order a couple times a year.  Occasional offers like that would definitely earn them my business more regularly.

Just to expand more on their shipping cost practices.  The last order from them was one I had to return.  Using their pre-paid UPS return lable actually cost less than what I had initially paid for them to ship the order to me in the first place.  Upon dropping my return off at a USP service center they weighed it and scanned it before giving me confirmation of my drop-off.  When Cabelas sent me that order they charged it at 5 lbs.  To my astonishment when I returned that exact same order back to them exactly as I recived it in the same box with everything that came in it, my UPS center weighed it at only 2 lbs and commented to me that it's never a good idea to use Cabelas pre-paid shipping lable when returning anything, would have been cheaper for me to have paid for my own return shipping instead.  Even the UPS clerk I dealt with (an obvious sportsman himself) commented himself on how unethical he thought Cabelas shipping practices were.

The problem with a lot of

The problem with a lot of their catalogs is that they print them on glossy paper so that they don't even make good outhouse fodder.  Now a few other catalogs that I get are made out of the old fashon plain paper which is a lot easier.

As far as Cabela's hard bound book I donate it to a son of a friend of mine.  He loves it.

I don't have much use for their big hard cover catalogs myself.  I keep them and occassionally use them as a reference but almost always wait uintil something is on sale from a smaller catalog (discounted price) before buying it.
