Thanks for the info TOPGUN

Thanks for the info TOPGUN but I have been talking talking to some residents that live west of Sheridan that are saying go north. They have taken several 160+ deer up there the last few years. I have heard the southern part is all orange. Still have lots of time to decide though. May have to check out both.

Are they telling you to go up

Are they telling you to go up into the forest or are they taking deer off the private lands up there? I'm not saying there aren't some decent deer up there. It's just that the numbers are very low and the ones that are there, especially the decent bucks, are going to be hard to find due to the difference in terrain/vegetation from the southern part. For a beginner it's especially tough hunting and the chances of getting into deer are less up there than down south. If you don't think you're going to see a lot of orange up there, you have another big surprise coming. One last thing and that's if you have a choice of when to go I'd highly suggest that you skip the first few days of the season, regardless of the unit. You'll enjoy it a lot more after the bulk of people head home. God luck wherever you end up!

Garmin 60CsX

Love, love, love... The Garmin 60 CsX!

Super unit, but is still a bit pricey...you can find them for <$300 on e-bay though.

Best unit I have ever used. Acquires a signal faster than any I have ever seen. Battery life is great, and keeps the signal better than any I have ever seen.

Though my absolute fav feature is opening up your download in Google Earth 3d and choosing the fly-over option!!! You can use a prop plane or a jet to fly back and forth over your waypoints in 3d!!

A few years ago a friend of mine bought a GPS and off we went hunting in Arizona. After a long day in the flat country where you couldn't see any landmarks he and another hunter that was with him headed back to the truck using the GPS to navigate their way. Well, when they hit pavement they realized that something had gone wrong. They missed the parked truck by over 100 yards and walked a extra mile to the paved road following the GPS directions. The kicker was that the second hunter was a pilot that was very familiar with GPS's. To this day he still doesn't know what went wrong.

Old Model but Good!

I use a Garmin eTrex Venture - it is about 12 years old but works like a charm.  I also always carry a compass.  I know how to work both very well.  I suggest if you get a gps then get it soon and practice using it a lot before going out hunting in a strange place.  Good luck and we await pictures of your successful hunt.  Thumbs up
