It was a calm morning on opening day in 2006. Me and my hunting partner were hiking the backcountry for Muley's and we were hunting in a spike only area for elk. That morning we had 2 close encounters with 3 big 4 and 5 point muley's but couldnt get a clean shot with the bow. We decided to head down the ridge and into this meadow to check for elk and deer sign, but before we headed down we thought we thought we would throw out a buggle to see if we could get any response. We didnt hear anything so we started hiking. When we got to the bottom we posted up for a while and didnt see much. So we decided we would head out and look elswhere, but not before throwing out another big buggle! Still no call back. We got up and started walking. Now where we were was like a 3ft tall grass field at the bottom of a couple ridges. As we walked into the field my buddy say's "S**T". I thought for sure we had spooked somthing but when I looked up all I could see was Bull Elk running straight towards us! All we could do is crouch down and get ready. I had no idea what was about to happen. With my adrenaline pumping I knocked an arrow hopeing to see a spike! Right then I looked up and there was Five Masher Bulls two 4 and 5 pointers and two Spike's running right over the top of us straight to where we had buggled! They were comming to gang bust the lone elk wich was us! We had a record 8x8 with huge spread come within 2 feet of us and broadside! Two of the other 6x7's came right on top of us too! I was so freaked at the time. It was my first close encounter with that many bulls! My buddy ended up taking a shot at one of the spike's but the arrow went right over the top of him and they all spooked! It was so intence that we both just sat there not beliving what just happend. If I just have had a bull tag I would probably have the WA state record! But I didnt and all I could do is watch. I cant wait till I draw a bull tag because Im ready!
