Buckrub and/or Elkkill....

Hey guys, I saw you 2 talking about unit 61, and you may have even mentioned 62. Well, I have a buddy whose Dad gets an elk or 2 and a deer almost every year.

He got some info for me, and he said he hunts in Unit 62. He told me that if I want to go there, to get ahold of him and he'd point me down the right roads and such.

Is this too good to be true, or with some inside information, is unit 62 a good unit? I wouldn't be picky about size of the bull, and heck, I may even be willing to just go for the meat and get a cow tag.

Another question is if you can get a deer tag in the draw there, and then buy OTC elk for the corresponding season? I figure if it's do-able, I could double my chances at getting an animal.

What do you think? I would be doing it next year, in 2012.

depending on what season you

depending on what season you plan on hunting, you should start picking up a few points for next year. Your gonna need them... even for deer.

Well, I know I have to for deer. However, from what I was told and read about, Unit 62 is OTC for Archery and for both 2nd and 3rd season.

My plan would be to apply for a deer tag that coincided with one of those OTC tags, then purchase the elk tag.

If you are thinking about

If you are thinking about hunting unit 61 or 62 for deer in 2012 you better put in for a preference point this year since in unit 61 you are going to need a minimum 7 points unless you find some private property to hunt. Unit 62 will take 1 point at least for the 2nd season. Now for elk unit 61 will be out of your reach for a few years unless you want to put in for a cow tag, unit 62 is wide open for you. So if your friend can get you into the elk for unit 62 you should be OK and if you can draw a deer tag for the same hunt you should have a freezer full of meat next fall. All the tags in both units are managed through the draw so no OTC tags.

So in the long run if you put in for a point for a deer this year you should be able to hunt the second season in 2012 for deer and you should be able to draw out a elk tag also with 0 points for the same season.

Okay, that's what I was looking for. 62 is where I would be headed. I have heard that 61 always goes in the draw, and 62 is OTC. OTC is what I want.

I will have to look on the regs page about applying for a point. I thought CO already drew though, or was that Wyoming?

Also, do I need to buy the whole license in order to apply, or can I just pay for the application part?

I better check, and quickly...

Yes, Wyoming is done, but you have until April 5th in Colorado. If you plan on OTC hunting, there's no reason not to also gain a preference point. Plus you'll need one for the deer hunt.

Oh and Wyoming still has the option of buying points later in the summer after the draw.

You can get a otc either sex tag for archery for unit 62 for elk but all the deer tags are draw only. As far as the appliction you need to send them the whole amount of the tag+applicaton fee+habitat stamp, and it is getting closer to the deadline of April 5

minus 3 bucks for the app fee, , $10 for habitat stamp and $25 if you didn't buy any other licenses last year. So essentially it will cost you $38 if you didn't buy a fishing license or hunting license last year.

After June 30th, get refunded the tag amount

I now have a point for deer
