Buck protecting his food!

I am fairly new to hunting, but have access to some private land here in Knox County Ohio. I had been hunting and decided to lay out a bag of some Magnum Buck Corn mix on the edge of a field to see how fast it would get eaten. I let it sit for about a week and I came back to it today to see over 3 large rubs on the trees on the edge of the field very close to the corn. Do you think this is a sign made by a buck saying "this is my food, stay away"? Is this a place I should be watching and even putting up a small feeder at? Not all of the corn is gone yet, but I was told he might be trying to "protect" his food in a sense. Any help or advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Welcome to BGH Thumbs up

This time of year a buck is more interested in marking his territory and "attracting the girls" rather than eating, thus the reason the bucks lose weight drastically this time of year, sleeping less and traveling more, the odd scrap with another buck & eating less. This activity depends greatly on the male competition and the buck/doe ratio.

Welcome,

I would have to agree with Hammer on this. This time of year they are pretty much in breeding mode and they have a one track mind. The good news is though that you know at least there are bucks in the area. Where in Knox county are you? I grew up there and still have a ton of family in the area. I've lived in Bladensburg, Danville, and mainly Mt. Vernon.

I have permission to hunt my friends farm, it's on the corner of Liberty Chapel Road and Green Valley Road almost 200 acres. I don't spend much time in Knox County, but if you don't know Mazza's Pizza in town is the best Italian Restaurant and buffet. I eat their everyday I go hunting! Thanks for the replies.

I think it has to do with what the other guys said, but also the food. The reason it has to do with the food is that maybe there are some resident does hanging around your food, and the buck is making his mark saying "those are my does"..... Yes

So, the does are claiming your food, and the buck is claiming your does...... Big smile
