Is BP sub in .54 renegade safe?

I haven't hunted blackpowder for about 20 yrs and am getting back into it. I've always hunted with FFg blackpowder, but understand that many shoot with the blackpowder substitutes. I have a .54 renegade and was wondering if it's safe to use the subs in this older percusssion rifle. If it is safe, how much should I use safely. I usually shoot 100-110 grains of BP. Any info would be great!

The gun isnt that old. In all actuality the bp subs are not explosive, so in essence they are safer to use. Most are based on the same gr as 2F bp so your powder measure should be about the same. The big question is what of the many substitutes to use?????

Thanks for the info. This was the response I was hoping for. Do you have any suggestions on which subs are best. I've heard good things about Black Mag 3 as far as burning ability, less fouling, and easy clean-up. What do you think?

I really don't know if one is better than another. Seems to be pros and cons for each brand? Since you are using an old caplock I might stick with pyrodex. Pyrodex was the one and only BP sub initially and that was before the 209 primer craze. Since Pyrodex was developed with the old "cap" as an ignition source it is still a pretty good bet for your gun.
Luck with the "rebirth" and lets see a photo of the old war horse Thumbs up (the gun that is)

I use Pyrodex and trust it in both stability and grade. I would go with that company. They have a hotline you can call with questions as well.

Re: Is BP sub in .54 renegade safe?

I've been shooting a Renegade for about 15 years (left hand lock, 54 cal). Started with pyrodex and experienced random and unexpected hang fires. Cost me two mule deer, one taxidermy size at 35 yards. Instead of throwing it off a cliff (one was handy and VERY tempting) I contacted T/C. A very friendly and helpful gentleman there had similar problems with his Renegade and had similar reports from other sidelock rifle shooters. His suggestion that I've been using ever since is 100 grains of ffg blackpowder and a T/C maxiball (435 gr in .54 cal). Three mule deer and two cow elk have managed an average of 35 yards after being hit at ranges of 25 to 90 yards. I'll be trying for a Colorado M/L elk tag this year and am not a bit reluctant in using this load. It's minute of elk accurate at 100 yards and clean up isn't any worse than pyrodex.
