Bowhunting and bears!

Sawbill, I can't hunt with bait in the state of Washington and its a public land hunt with no guide. I will take any advice you can give gladfully, since this will be my first bear hunt and I don't know much at all about bears. I have a general idea where we have seen bears before, next to a watering whole and this was my first unit choice for the spring bear drawing. We are going to set up a ground blind and see what happens. In Washington you can use any legal weapon when hunting bear so my dad is going to bring his 7mm but I get the first crack with the bow Yes . Have you ever had any luck with ground blinds hunting bears??? Any info on shot placement for bears would be great. Even if I don't get pulled for spring bear I'am going to go general season this year. Thanks for any info!!

Ground blinds work fine but its a tall order to take one with archery as your shot has to be under 20 yds. And seein you can't bait, that makes it all that much tougher because any bear, depending on your location, may not have a set route to get into that spot. So that alone makes placing a ground blind difficult. There are ways to legally 'bait' when you can't legally bait and thats to use natural drawing cards like fresh grasses along a drawn down beaver pond, creeks or pools with spawning suckers, early berry crops if you have such a thing in your area, that sorta thing. To take one with a rifle is a bit easier. I'd set up on the opposite side of a grassy marsh in known bear areas or along a known travel route. Either way, taking a bear without baiting is difficult and you may have to talk to some guys about going the calling route--something I know little about.

sawbill, thanks for all the advice! I guess we will just have to give it a shot and see what happens. If nothing works out the first few days, maybe we will go to the rifle(but I don't really want to do that lol )
