I am thinking about getting a leftover tag for 3rd season and hunting deer with my bow. I will wear camo and some legal amount of blaze orange; 1) has anyone else done this, 2) been successful, 3) is it worth it, 4) and is it legal in Colorado. I have an inquiry into the Colorado DOW. Thanks.
I don't think it's legal but I'm not sure (here in Co). Also, bow hunting mule deer in blaze orange doesn't seem like the smartest thing. From what I understand it's hard enough stalking em in full camo before they've been spooked by multiple hunting and rifle seasons. Now, the rut may help when their dumb for love, but even then it seems a stretch. Also, the rut really doesn't kick in until mid to late Nov. past most Co. late deer seasons.
It is as long as you are wearing the 500 inches of orange. My buddy does it all the time and has good success; but he is a frickin maniac with his bow and determination!
In my interpretation of the regs you would not be recquired to wear orange. Although the risk is up to you. You only have to wear orange if you're hunting with a firearm.
Here's how the regs read, IT'S AGAINST THE LAW TO: Not wear at least 500 square inches of solid DAYLIGHT FLUORESCENT ORANGE material in an outer garment above the waist while hunting deer, elk, pronghorn, bear or moose with any firearm.
that may be true but you're hunting during a firearm season with a firearm tag. It is legal to hunt with a bow during rifle season however orange is still required. plus....you'd have to be pretty crazy to not wear orange during a rifle season even if your not the hunter
i'm decked out in orange during rifle season and other hunters still make me nervous!!
No offence but if you take it its your fault! Its those out of staters that we need to worry about they see something move in the woods and its all of a sudden its hambuger! There are alot of triger happy hunters out there! As stated above you would be crazy to go out during later seasons w/o the blaze!
hellomcfly, have you talked to a DWM or DOW employee that told you that you had to wear orange. The regs specifically state "while hunting with any firearm". They don't say "while hunting with any firearm license." I do not know this answer with certainty but the regs do seem to point towards it being legal to hunt without the orange. But I do agree with you all... it's a bad idea unless you want .30 caliber holes poked in ya.
Gentlemen, thanks for your replies.
See answer from DOW below.
Hello Andy,When you purchase any rifle season license, you can use any method oflegal take. Just you still need to wear the 500 square inches of solidday glow fluorescent orange. It makes it harder to bow hunt. But thechallenges are part of the adventure too. Good luck to you. Nice, thanks for the update!! Must also be based on your type of lcense then.
Good to know... The DOW should probably make that section a touch less ambiguous.
I'm out on the Eastern Plains of Colorado, and while hunting on opening day of Pronghorn season, I was wearing a huge orange sweatshirt - hoodie type. You should be able to spot that - right? I heard Whizzzz, Whizzz- and realized that some crazy idiot forgot his glasses or has an extreme case of color blindness and was shooting right at me! I am out in the open, on buffalo grass and crp - wearing orange, walking upright, carrying a rifle and a very surprised look on my face! My ex husband does not even live in this part of the US! This was followed closely by a lot of words I learned while in the service - not postable! My advice, WEAR ORANGE - even if you don't have to during rifle season!
