Bow Hunters Only!!!!!!

Although I agree with shooting a 300 plus yard shot takes a high level of skill,I do not consider it a "far" hunt . I also agree that a few bad apple's do not spoil the bunch. However, when the bad apple's start taking over the basket, that is when it become a problem. I feel hunter's as a group should not fight one another but bond together and educate and pass down good ethics and heritage. As for the complaint of bow hunter's getting longer season and season's in the rut,I call that ignorance. Modern firearm user's harvested 2,941 in 2006 basically in 8 days. If you double the days you would most likely double the total harvested (especially in the heat of the rut). That would be 5,882 elk a year in modern firearms alone. (that is more than all the user groups combined) If you throw in the other user groups that would take the total elk harvested in Washington from 5,500 to 8,441 per year. There would not be a elk one for my son to hunt when he becomes of age if modern firearms had a two week season in the rut. I feel preservation is key and I feel the way the WDFW handles the user groups and season's is one of the few things they do well.

Yea the game department does do a good job at season managment. Im all about the respect for the game. I think that Deer and Elk need to be on a tight watch and make positive they are in well being. Because I would hate for all hunting to be stopped and put on a special tag only law because of a low herd count. It will if, like what Funkster said happens.

Funkster, you are missing my point. Go back and read. I would like equal access, equal opportunity. I would like a chance at a different season, with my modern rifle, an early season, a later season.

Many bowhunters are shooting cows during their regular season....

I say make it all more restrictive. The fact is, the bowhunters do not want to give up the good thing they have.

Bow Hunters Only!!!!!!

Well this morning I heard a story that really upset me. One of my firends that I found out riffle hunts just got back from hunting up by omac. He was all pumped and excited because his group of hunters shot 6 deer. 4 Bucks and 2 does. He went on to tell me a pretty frightning story of how it was a shooting fest all weeken long. Shot's being fired every wich direction at the same deer! His buck for instance was shot by him 2 times then shot 3 more times before a conflict of who shot it broke out and another shot fired point blank and blew the hine quarter all up! And this whole time he's laughing about the deal! I mean is that even close to being alright? I don't think so. I geuss drop another bad apple in the basket as some will say but that's pretty bad! sad

not tryin to start an arguement or anything but I think your buddy may have been pulling your leg a little bit. I have a hard time envisioning shooting from every direction at the same deer. And while i have heard stories of other hunters shooting the same deer nothing close to what you are describing. If it is true it is sad and if it had happened to me I wouldnt tell a soul to advoid incriminating myself, so where were the wardens when this shock and awe mission was being carried out on our washington mule deer ?

So let me get this straight, you are saying since bow hunter's can harvest cow's,then modern fire arms should be able to harvest cows as well...ignorance,my point exactly. Do a little research and find out how many modern firearm hunter's are out there. Then give them 3 point or anterless and wait a few years and then try to find a elk in the woods. That is not conservation that is greed. Look at the harvest number's with most units 3 point or better, modern firearms makes up the highest harvest numbers. It does not seem to me that they need any help, like hunting in the rut.. The WDFW makes the user season's to conserve elk and elk hunting and I feel that they do as best as they can making the hunting season as fair for the hunter's as well as the animals. The fact is the average bow shot happens 25 yards and under. I would asume that the average modern firearm shot would be closer to 100 and over. You can not have a "fair" season's becasue it is comparing apples and oranges. If we left it up to you, it would not be fair to the elk.

I agree with you on that one. It would be a killing fest if riffle hunter's got the rut and were able to take cow's. The elk population would plummit! And I mean Hard!! I have see so many elk at 60 + yds. I cant even fathum how many elk I could have killed if I had a riffle. And I dont mean that as a disrespect but a fact! There would be a rediculas amount of elk killed if it were to happen. And frankly it most likely won't.

Seen it on deer and twice on elk. I know a park ranger that still has the lower leg of an elk with 3 bullet holes in it. Over 50 rounds fired by who knows how many guys. 3 dead bulls, one dead cow and two wounded cows. In a 3pt or better unit. This was the straw that broke the camels back and led to the unit becoming AHE only.
