Book Cliffs Spike Bull -Recommendations on where to hunt

Hi guys, I am new to the forum but not new to hunting. For years, I have hunted the Book Cliffs for deer. Mostly BIg Park, BItter Creek, McCook Ridge, and Attache Ridge. I have seen a few Elk but not enough to know where might be a good general area. I plan on hunting by ATV and hiking. I have been consideing further south in the Steer Ridge or Indian Ridge areas. Would appreciate some advice. Thanks in advance!

I'm surprised you haven't found a lot of elk on either Bitter Creek or McCook because that's what I would've recommended. I haven't elk hunted that region for years though. I"ll ask a buddy where he was hunting a few years back as he had a limited entry elk tag and shot a nice bull. He said he got into a lot of elk.

I haven't hunted the area since 2002 but at that time there were a lot of spikes between 12 mile Knoll and the end of the road on Steer Ridge. Also you may want to try Chepita (sp) canyon just off of the micro wave towers. You can access it off of the Over The Top road once it hits Bitter Creek. The biggest problem that I see with a spike tag in the Books is all the big bull that you will see and have to pass on. I know where 2 bulls are that would push 450 pts just off of McCook Ridge

Thanks guys for the suggestions! I will likely go out early and do a little scouting to see if I can spot any bulls. Critter, the 450 point guys must have been awesome to see! I have seen only one in that range while deer hunting there. When you go the to the Steer Ridge area, do you enter from the reservation or from the North (Bonanza, White River area) or is there another way?

rather_be_huntin, thanks for asking your buddy. I look forward to hearing what he has to say.

The only way that I have came in to Steer Ridge is off of I-70 and up Hay Canyon out of Westwater. If you come in from the reservation I believe that you will come down Moon Ridge and then head back down Steer Ridge. From Bonanza you will be on Mc Cook Ridge until the micro wave towers and then have to head west past East Canyon and Hay Canyon. The canyon that I found most of the Elk in is Peterson Canyon I believe. There is a road that comes off of Steer Ridge and heads down into the bottom. Since the fire in 2002 I don't think that you can go quite far into it but it runs for quite a while. That is where I took my 7x6 375 pt bull in 2001. Those two big bulls have a secrete hiding place that they drop into at first sight of any problems but if either of two of my friends draw out there in the next couple of years one of them will be hanging on the wall.

Thanks Critter, I plan to go in through McCook from the North and check out the Patterson Ridge and Chipeta areas before heading further south and west. I really appreciate your help! Hope you or your buddies draw and get one of those 450's!

I will post how it went when I get back.
