Anyone using doe or buck calls? If so, which do you prefer?

I don't know how well deer calls work but, I got a electronic preditor call a couple years ago and have managed to call up a bunch of mule deer. Gonna take it with me for blacktails this year and see if it works there too. Oh, it's the fawn in distress that get's them.

Actually they just sort of get up. The thing get's them to expose themselves without much alarm. When they leave, they don't seem to bolt but rather just walk away quickly.

I tried it on black tails and I didn't see any but my son said it got one up for him. If a guy was good with a reed call, that disc you put in your mouth, and could call the fawn distress it might be a good idea.

Grunt calls have worked for me, but only for stopping them to get a shot.

I HAVE NEVER ACTUALLY USED A CALL TO CALL IN A DEER BUT I BELIVE THAT IF THE BUCK IS NOT TO FAR INFRONT OF YOU THEN SET UP AND WAIT ONCE YOU CAN SEE IT I WOULD USE THE CALL TO GET A GOOD SHOT. IF ITS RUNNING I HAVE NOTICED WHILE I WAS COYOTE HUNTING A BIG BUCK WAS RUNNING AND I HIT THE PUP CALL AND IT HIT THE BRAKES LIKE NO OTHER. WELL LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU GUYS THINK.

Not that I do or anything but I would like to know where in the regs does it state that you can not hunt with electronic calls? (Pg 65 in the 2007 WA hunting regs under "Equipment and Hunting Methods") If that is tru that you can NOT do that, then that is news to me. but hey i geuss you learn something new everyday. right.... I use a rubber band call called "deer talk". It was cheap ($5.00) but i have had some pretty good results with it.

I think it is the fact that the mews you make with it are famillar enough to the vocalizations deer make that it makes them curious. Also making a 'fawn distress' type call sounds alot like a baby crying, a rabbit crying, a fawn crying, and so on. Something about a babys cry always puts animals on alert, including people.

I think that curosity kills the deer with these calls.

Don Laubach wrote a book about the call, and how to use it called "Deer Talk". Pretty good read, some interesting facts.

Also to ad to that in page 66 #12 in the upper portion of the page it state "It is illegal to hunt waterfowl, turkey, or deer with the use or aid of electronic calls and battery powered or other electronic devices as decoys.
I also call WDFW Enforcement line (1-360-902-2936) and they said you CAN hunt Elk, Cougar, Bear, Bobcat and anyother small game with Electronic calls. -----

WAC 232-12-257
Use of decoys and calls.
(1) It is unlawful to hunt waterfowl, wild turkeys, or deer with the use or aid of battery-powered or other electronic devices as decoys.

(2) It is unlawful to hunt waterfowl, wild turkeys, or deer with the use or aid of electronic calls.
