Blacktail Bucks

Here are the two blacktails I harvested in 2012. They are not the two bucks that I was hoping to put my tags on but they will do. Life was busy this year with work and a new baby.  Hope everyone has a great 2013 season.

Both fine bucks in my opinion

Both fine bucks in my opinion and would be very happy to get one like them.

You hunting 2 states or have a 2 buck limit. I can only have 1 here in Colorado.

Both blacktails came from western Oregon.  The one with the broken beam was a general archery tag.  The other blacktail was a 2nd deer tag in a different hunt series in Oregon.  It makes it so a person can get two deer tags here in Oregon but they may take a few to several years to draw unless you can find a landowner with 40+ acres that can get landowner tags for their property only.  My tag was one of these landowner tags since I did not draw the tag for the entire unit.  I actually past pm this buck last year.  He still has his 3pt mainframe with the little 4th point kicker on the one side.  He did however added a little more mass but still not very good genetics.

I wouldn't kick about either

I wouldn't kick about either of those. blacktail's have got to be the hardest to hunt, and the bucks the hardest. When I was a kid in the valley we'ed get our deer every year but we spent a whole lot of time before hand finding them. I never shot a blacktail buck as big as either of those.

I agree with you Don about blacktail bucks being very hard to hunt and feel very lucky with getting both those bucks in only hunting 3 days out of my two seasons.  Sometimes it is hard to know who much work you put into something and then not quit reaching your goals.  The two main things in my life outside of my family is hunting and exercising.  I don't have TV, play sports, go to bars, or have any other hobbies.  My goals are to harvest the largest mature blacktails I can find and stay in great shape and health to live as long of life as possible to take care of my family and hunt as long as possible.  Year round scouting, hunting, and exercising has caused me to miss out on numerous events and times to hangout with friends, but I have made that choice to be the best hunter and the healthiest most inshape person I can be.  That is just a little reason why I was not 100% satisfied with these bucks.  It was however my choice to shoot and not hold out for any of the larger bucks in my areas.  That is something I will have to live with until this years season starts and I know those larger bucks are still around;)

Nice, both look nicer than mine. Sorry the photo's pretty blurry. 5x5 if you count the eye guards.

Blacktail, what's the terrain

Blacktail, what's the terrain like where you hunt?  I'm familiar with the sitka blacktail, are the columbian variety similar in territory habits?  Are you hunting alpine areas?

I love the PNW.  We come just about every august for a week or two.  We've stayed on Cannon beach, Orcas island in the San Juans, Seattle and Vancouver, Wa. And as far south as Crescent City California.

Thanks for the post.  You've got high standards.  I respect that.
