I feel the best answer for this question is 5. I would start scouting for bear sign in the area I would expect them to be feeding at that time of year. I guess my answer would be close to thier food supply or along a trail leading to thier food supply. Find their food, you find the bear sign, all that's left is to be patient and you will see the bear.

Question#4 I will say #2 near water. Every bear needs it and I would think it would much easier to scout around the edge of a lake or stream rather than trying to figure out where they're feeding. Tracks would would be easily left in the moist earth around the water. Think

Question #4 I say answer #2 for the reason redrider stated. I would answer number 5 and have a long winded explaination but I'm lazy (like Big black bears) so I'll just say #2. Big smile

I have found most of the bear sign I have seen on oak flats in the fall and the rest of the time in the thickest, darkest nastyest swamps I could get into. BUT, some of the guys I have hunted with also look strictly on the logging roads. I think it all depends on the method you are going to use to hunt them. Also depends on the amount of human activity they have to deal with. In Pa I look in the swamps. In NJ I bairt on the oak flats. In Maine and Tn, the logging roads for tracks to release the hounds on. I know you are refering to baiting but most of the hunting I have done hasent been with bait.

Berfore I even scrolled down to your selections, I picked logging roads, No 3. Reason being is there's lots of new, lush regeneration and sucker growth after a cut and early spring draws bears to these places for the fresh vegetation--something they need as soon as they leave their dens. As well, these opened areas also produce good raspberry and blueberry crops in July/August so that also keeps them in the area. Result--highly visible piles of bear crap along he roadway.

I suppose No.6, 'anywhere' could be the answer but the 3 basic elements have to be there, food, water and shelter. If either is absent, then its not suitable bear habitat, for rearing purposes or otherwise. Individual parameters could apply as well, depending on what part of the country you come from, the flat to rolling hills of the east coast to the mountainous regions of BC.
