Hotmoon, you should re-post your disclaimer that your reasons and reasoning often applies to your area specifically. This is likely why you and I are at odds on so many theories. Even where I am in Northern Ontario, bears have long since denned before the first snow. I betcha its the same for the guys hunting in Tennessee and other southern climates.
BTW, one of my hunters took a boar last night that weighed on a scale, 345 lbs. field dressed so on the hoof would have weighed close to 400. The guy was from Ohio and was the first bear he's ever seen.

Ok i will try again .

Question # 3

In order to survive the winter, black bears sleep in dens big enough to fit them, where are these dens located :

1 on slopes with plenty of thick cover
2 bottom of valleys with plenty of thick cover
3 on top of ridges with plenty of thick cover
4 any place as long it provide thick cover
5 in the open
6 none of the above ( tell us where )

The correct answer is # 1
the majority is found on slopes, if u want to see one locate these slopes..u can find dens in other places too here is why :

the first to den is mothers and cubs, so mother with cubs pick the best dens locations , the reason they pick slopes as some say because when snow start melting slopes does not hold the water down and drown the den ,, just a theory.
second to den after mothers and cubs is the yearling and dry sows ,, usualy not too long after mother and cubs , their dens are located if possible in the same area or close to it, that would be near the bottom of the slopes.
thrid come in line is big boars,, these big guys enter their dens last due to the fact that they eat as much as possible and keep eating after everyone else has gone to their dens , their dens are located at the bottom of the slopes, and sometimes they don't even make dens they just sleep and let snow cover them.

Question # 4

Ok, we all know scouting for bear signs is the first step to success, saying it is actually easy but doing it is hard due to endless bear habitat ... where/what is the best location to start ?

1 on top of ridges
2 near water
3 near logging roads
4 in the open
5 none of the above ( tell us where )

the correct anwer is # 2 near water

U can start scouting anywhere u like, i myself start scouting the minute i step out of my truck.. but i don't get serious about it until i reach water .
if u want to narrow it down and save time and fraustration on yourself then u should look at the topomap and locate water and go straight to it and start looking near the edge of the water an follow any small track u find .

our playground is big and if u want to start anywhere, it will probably be a none sense plan to find what u r looking for .
once u locate water walk in circles around the water as deep as 200 yards and then move farther away from the water and circle again every few hundred yards .. these are the corridors the bears will use to get to water. if no sings then locate another water source and repeat the step above .
