There is a proposed ammendment to the Criminal Code with the well-intentioned purpose of beefing up laws against cruelty to animals. Unfortunately it has some glaring oversights which open to door to anyone harvesting an animal while hunting or farming being charged with cruelty to animals. Please contact your MP to demand that this Bill be clarified to exclude hunters/trappers taking game by legal methods, and/or farmers slaughtering their own stock for food or to end suffering of chronically ill animals.

This is the passage of particular concern. Para C seems designed to protect hunters, however the door is left open by the terms brutally and viciously in para B not being defined, and the specific reference to an immediate death being irrelevant. (Also bear in mind that most hunting kills are not immediate - swift yes, immediate - no)

182.2 (1) Every one commits an offence who, wilfully or recklessly,
(a) causes or, being the owner, permits to be caused unnecessary pain, suffering or injury to an animal;
(b) kills an animal or, being the owner, permits an animal to be killed, brutally or viciously, regardless of whether the animal dies immediately;
(c) kills an animal without lawful excuse;
