WHAT AN AWESOME HUNT!!!

I nailed this trophy buffalo in Harstle, CO. He ended up weiging out at 2500-2800 lbs.

Due to my busy schedule (training and surprise deployments ;) I didn't get a chance to go elk hunting last year. One of my company commanders ended up giving me some information for an outfitter that works the land in Harstle.

I ended up chasing him over 2 miles over rough terrain at about 9000 ft. Talk about a work out. He didn't go down with out a fight!!! Infact I had to shoot him on the move, without cross sticks, winded from running, and took 2x kneeling shot just to slow him down.

He turned towards me and stompped his foot... and was about to charge. I had to get a solid shot off on him or I think he would have charged right over me. I layed down took a deep breath and squeezed of a good shot finally to drop him. BEST HUNT I'VE EVER HAD.

We got him winched onto the back of my guide's truck and broght him to some ranchers that had to quarter him TWICE so I could manhandle him. They used a Ford F-850 Crane pick up to dress him out.

He was ranked a Gold Star in the SCI index. My freezer was stacked top to bottom, back to front and the door was hanging of the hinges with 875 lbs of boneless meat.

Enjoy the pictures... IT WAS FREAKIN PRICELESS!!!

Caliber

No, I used a 7mm with 350 grain.

I just couldn't get a good shot on him. He was never closer than 150-200 meters away from me until I cut him off. I took two kneeling shots just to slow him down.

After it was all said and done I hit him with six poorly placed shots and one final good one that dropped him. I shoot expert with my assigned weapon... it was just a whole different type of "stress shoot".

Try running 1/2 a mile at about a in under 4 mins and shoot your rifle. That's about how I felt.

He had a wind-pipe that was about 9 inches in diameter and was hopping around the mountain like a gazell. It was amazing to see a beast that big move so quickly.

I've been training in the mountains getting ready for Afghanistan so I was in pretty good shape.

nice buffalo man. congrats on the monster. With that much meat I'd say you could give all us BGH.net members 5lbs of burger and still have about 1000lbs left for yourself LOL. I hope you have a BIG freezer if not I got some room in mine.

Great hunt!!!! I rememver vividly, fly fishing an upper branch of the Platt River that goes through Hartsell about 10 years ago... I was very into the water that morning, had my head down looking at the water, scooting along the fishing access easment along the river without paying attention to my surroundings when i heard a thump sound. I looked up and saw, across the river, a very large buffalo looking right at me and stomping the ground beneath it. Needless to say, I dropped my rod, walked backwards in a brisk fashion and waited about 100 yard away till he moved on so I could retrieve my fly rod. Great buffalo ranches out there!

HOLY $&!#!!!! I never realized just how big Bison can get. I've seen them in Yellowstone, but that thing is huge. I love the 3rd pic with him hanging about 18 ft in the air.
