Big buck still alive??

Hi guys this is my first post on this website. I live in northeast ohio and bow season just started. In my area ive got 2 good trail camera pictures of the same buck 2 years apart. They were takin in 2003 and 2004. I never personally saw the buck but my dad may have. Anyways, in 2005 a big whitetail was shot within 300 yards of where the pictures were taken. I have a picture of the deer that was shot and im asking the opinion of you guys whether of not its the same buck?

The first one looks like it might have been the same deer well before it was done growing horns but my personal opinion is it probably is not the same deer as the tine length is extrememly short in comparison to the beam growth there. Definately no on the second deer. However in reference to the first buck, keep in mind that mounted buck has left his genes in the area and that may well be one of his offspring growing a rack like daddy did..

I reread your post and see that the trail cam pic was taken a year prior to that deer being harvested. That being the case i would say yes theres a very good chance that the trail cam buck and the one on the wall are the same deer. They share many characteristics and given the mounted deer had another year of age when taken it would be right in line with the antler mass you would expect to see a deer put on in that period of his life. roughly 30% increse in over all antler mass year 4-5. So to correct myself, yep I think you probably got a living picture of a deer that now on someones wall. heck of a nice buck there though.

I agree, note the distinctive rear-hook on the tips of both brow tines. Too bad, but as was mentioned he'd have scattered a few oats before being taken... Thumbs up

I'm not so sure your trail cam pics are of the same deer. How can you be sure? Are there other pictures? Just curious...

I think the second trail cam pic could be the one mounted, but it would definitely have grow some tine length and I'm not sure about the brow tines. Hard to tell from the angle on the trail cam pics.

Like somebody said, though, hopefully he has lotsa offspring running around.

1st welcome to BGH. With deer like those pictured in your woods I believe that you'll have lots of great stories to pass on to us in the near future.

As for the Deer being the same...1st deer and 3rd deer I would say yes. I see the same Brow Tine twist and hook in both deer and also both 1st and 3rd have short, rounded ears with a distinctive notch seen on his right ear, and there is also some webbing between the antler tines on both deer and that's genetic and won't change throughout the deers life. The antlers in last picture are probably just his 2nd set and I would imagine that he was a basket 6 point with his first set.

2nd deer could be but not enough pictured to draw a solid conclusion from. He does have some serious mass there though.

His Pappy will have spread his gene around as well as this deer has so there are some brothers and a few sons running around and one will certainly step up to take his place so hunt with confidence.

Thanks for the advice, i just can't tell if they are the same or not. I know the kid who shot the buck in the top picture, and i took that pic at the BBBC show at the fin last year. One reason i think it is the same buck is becouse i havnt found any big tracks or had any more trail cam pics or seen a buck that big in the area since. Ive only seen a couple small sixes and a four. My brother did say he saw a big guy in velvet but that dont mean hes still around. Also, another really big buck was shot about 1/2 mile to a mile from the place the pics were taken in 2005. The pictures below. Just adding it to see what ya think.

oh and 1 major correction i realized, both the deer that were shot were shot in 2004, the same year as the 2nd picture up top. Below is the 2nd picture taken of the buck in picture #2. It shows it a little bit better.

Just for clarity

1st picture= Shot by hunter in November 2004
2nd picture= Taken in july 2004 by DeerCam
3rd Picture= Taken in October 2003 by Deercam
4th Picture= Shot by hunter in December 2004 (prolly not related)
5th Picture= Better view of buck in picture #2

Did you mean
1st picture= Shot by hunter in November 2005 or
is it 2004?

The trail pics show some of the same character as the shot buck, but I'm not totally convinced any of them are the same buck.
The first trail pic shows a protrusion on the deers right brow, I don't see that on the shot buck.
The second trail pic has those same brow tine curves, but that deer didn't grow that much mass and tine length in one year.
I'd say you still have some great deer running around unless they were shot and you didn't know about it.

Welcome to BGH Big smile Stay around get ready to hear some good deer stories, the seasons just getting started Thumbs up
