223 remington, in a bolt action, is a popular choice.
You can spend the entire day and not have any ill affects from recoil.
Very inexpensive to feed. Even less if you load your own.
Can be a very accurate round. When the right load is found. Either factory fodder or home rolled.
Factory fodder can be found just about anywhere ammo is sold.
Military rounds can be bought by the case. On a good day they practically give the stuff away.

I use a 220 swift and a 6mm Rem. for coyotes. They both work wonders but it can be hard to find factory ammo for them. I reload so it isn't a problem but I wouldn't trade either calibre.

22-250. It is a beauty.

While there are better choices, I prefer the ol' 223 and then you can practice inexpensively at the range 'till your hearts content.

Kind of like saying I NEED a magnum when a 30-06 will do just fine (as the 223 will).

Lately I've been loading a 243 win with Noslers 55gr BT's, with their little purple tip. Moves them out at more than 3800fps with H414.

The most accurate gun I have ever shot was a 22-250 single shot.

Good recommendations everyone.

Conversely, if you're not collecting hides or eating meat, just about any big game caliber will do the job on varmints. Even my son has taken coyotes at 150 yards with a 30-30 and my practice ammo in 30-06 works well too.

As for "gun preference," it's hard to find a bad one on the market. Savages are good (with the Accu-Trigger) and so are Remingtons, Winchesters, and the Weatherby VanGuard.

For any precision shooting, suggest you have a competent gunsmith adjust the trigger; I like 2 1/2 - 2 3/4 lbs. Ruger 77's, Mossberg ATR's, Browning A-Bolts, and the Stevens 200 (made by Savage) all have nonadjustable triggers that are harder than normal to work on.

If I had the money, I'd probably select a Remington 700 SPS Stainless in 223 Remington with a 26" barrel ($469.00 @ Sportsman's Warehouse); having had good experience with a similar model in 30-06. Comes with a cushy Limbsaver Pad too, but not needed in the .223 caliber.

Remington 700 SPS Stainless

Walmart sells Savage 110 package rifles for $349.00 and also Winchester Ultimate Shadows with scope & sling for $398.00. Bolt of these rifles come with 22" and 24" barrels respectively, but the Remington 700 gives you 26" as an added bonus.

223 is a good cartridge to start with for varminting. I would go with a heavy barrel and top it with the best variable objective scope you can afford.
