Best Time to Hunt....

July 2003 Poll:

Best Time to Hunt....

Some believe the dawn hours are the best time for hunting, some the dusk, and still others find the afternoon to their liking. To find out where most hunters stand, we are putting the age old question to BGH readers. What is the best time to hunt?

I usually see a lot more deer in the evening than any other time. I know that they do move during midday, but I just tend to see them more in the evening.

About the only time I find myself hunting in the afternoon is as a continuation of a morning stalk, or if the weather is cold and the game is moving around to stay warm.

If it was a clear night with a full moon followed by a relatively warm day, afternoon hunting is down right craptacular. The elk and deer just lay down (usually in the heaviest God awful, racket making, I-can-hear-you-coming-for-miles brush they can find) and won't move unless you drive them out. And driving doesn't seem to work unless you have 4-6 hunters and even then you may be foiled....

If I had to choose one time to hunt it would be morning. Get to your area in the cover of darkness and wait for the ambush. Having said that, I have taken deer at all times of the day with the largest at 1:00pm.

Where I hunt, I hunt mostly mulies. although I have killed a couple nice bucks in the evening, I have killed more in the morning hours between daylight and 11:00. the biggest deer I got was taken at 9 in the morning MDT.
I like the morning cause the window of opportunity for mulies in the evening is slim. you might catch them comming into the meadows or rivers but it is usually late.it seems that the smaller bucks and does come in early but the big bucks come in late. In the morning you can catch them leaving and then you can plan a stalk. that's how I have the best luck.

I know my answer will not be agreed with across the board but here goes. All three answers can be good ones depending on terrain, weather, and what time of year it is! I killed a good buck last year at about 1:00 and passed on a couple smaller just before that. He was no monster but had good tine length and height. Bottom line is adjust your tactics to the conditions at hand, hunt hard all day long, and never give up. Your chances of shooting a quality deer will be higher.

Yeah weather can be a big factor, Smith8005 and make the time of day irrelevant, although I still find myself hunting more in the morning.

Good point, welcome to the board.
