best time for British Columbia Mule Deer Hunt

I'm looking at booking a guided hunt in southeast BC (Cranbrook area) for fall 2007. It will be a mule deer and whitetail combo hunt, but I plan to focus on muledeer. The outfitter has November 9th to 15th open, which appears to be that very last part of the rifle season. I assume this is in the rut. Does anyone know if this is a prefered time of the seaon? My only concern is that the seaon starts in mid-Ocotber and many other hunters will have already been in the wood prior to my hunt. Thanks in advance!

That is a good time to go. Much will depend on the weather. I have hunted in the Kootenay's quite a bit and at that time of year you can still be hunting up high if the fall is a warm one or you can have a couple of feet of snow.

As for residents, much will depend on where you are hunting and the access. If there is lots of access there will be lots of hunters, if it is a pack in situation or on private land then you won't have much to worry about.

I basically agree with you, but I have hunted there and in the accessible area hunting pressure can get quite high with 4x4's everywhere................I do no spend a lot of money to go on a guided hunt and experience that. If I pay for a guided hunt I expect to get a quality hunting experience, and for me that means away from people. But, each to their own.

huntfish, that is by far the best time to hunt big mulies here in the Kootenays. If you are going guided, you will be a long ways away from most residents. Depending on your outfitter, you will be heading for the high country on horse back, they know where the deer are .

I work for an outfitter here, we do get some nice bucks early in the season, but your odds are better in November.

Oh ya.......nice country. Who do you guide for? I spent a lot of time north of there in the Elk Valley. Hunted a lot up the drainages north of Sparwood. I use to know most of the guides in that country back when I was outfitting in BC.

Beautiful country. Good thing they put road closures on in a lot of areas or the road hunters would have had a field day. Not too many drainages left without a logging road or mining road.

Jim Hicks old territory is where I guide. Most people who hunted that country know of Jimmy. I live in Sparwood.

Yeah they could add a few more road closures though, especially around the mines, an amazing number of bulls get taken every year right next to the mine borders. Aint hunting in my eyes.

One of the best things they ever did here is the 6 point elk and 4 point mulie restrictions.

Heres a pic of a mine buck.....

Model 88............do you work at one of the mines the rest of the year?

Yes there is lots of game in the mine sites. I have seen some great deer, elk and rams where you can't hunt. They know they are safe in there. We use to take horses up the closed roads to the alpine...Kilmarnock and Henrietta etc. We always had the world to ourselves up there and always got our elk.

For BC, I would say you will nail the rut during that time frame.............go for it.
Some areas I use to hunt would stay open till early Dec. The very last days we would see some real old mossy horns finally droppin down the mtn. By then the sheep had been 1000's of feet lower for a month. Really nice to see a 30 inch buck up to his belly in snow and headin down to visit.
