I have an archery tag for Unit 24 in the Flattops Wilderness area. I hunted the area last year from September 10th -16th and got ran out by a snow storm. I saw two huge 6x6's the first evening within 400 feet of camp and the elk were bugling good all week. I had about 5 different encounters within 60 yards but I could never get any closer. We had a blast - but our first thoughts were that the bulls just weren't ready and that we needed to be there later this year. Now is where the problem comes in. My brother put in with us this year and his wife is expecting their first child the first week in October. He wants to be there on the first day of the season to insure that he gets to hunt, but I am afraid we will be there to early to hear much bugling. Does anyone have any suggestions on when is the best time to archery hunt? Is it better to hunt the big bulls before they gather their harem?

Season is a little over a month away and already I am having trouble sleeping at night for thinking about the hunt. Can I expect to hear bugling on the season opener?
