Best powder for 44 mag

I am debating between 2400 and blue dot for my full power 44 mag loads in my super redhawk. 240 grain JHPs seem to work better with the blue dot, 300 grainers seem to prefer 2400. These aren't compressed loads, but they are full capacity.

Anyone else got any ideas?

This may be a little late, but I think that H110 and W296 may be another option that you should consider. H110, 21.0 grains under a 300 grain cast lead gascheck will produce.

Can't comment on your other thread. Other than I will never use any AA powder again after some really bad experiences with their rifle powders a few years ago.

My personal pick for powders in the 44, and only because I get great results with them, would be H110 or 2400. I've used Blue dot and been happy but always lean back towards H110 for some reason. Thats what I used in my redhawk until I sold it to buy the Scandium 44.

And FWIW with hard cast 240s for plinking I just burn up Unique.

Best powder for 44 mag

Hey, thanks for the replys back. I've heard of others using H110 and W296 in 44 mag and 45 colt + loads, but I kinda figured it might be a little too slow. I think, though you may have convinced me to put them both on my Xmas list this year. Thanks for the suggestions.

My first reloading experience was with Blue Dot and 240 JHPs in my old Super Blackhawk. I was able to get a little over 1500 fps with that load, but when I went to heavier bullets, it just seemed like Blue Dot lost too much performance without sticking the primers out, so I switched to 2400 on the heavy stuff. I still plink with 210 and 240 grain lead bullets, and I load big Swift 300 grain JHPs for hunting. I was out of 2400 so I got a deal on some AA No. 9 and that seems to be working at least as well, though I haven't had time to chrony my workups yet. I guess now I am going to have to try a couple more powders and see what happens with those big mean Swift bullets. I am hoping to get up to 1300 fps from my Super Redhawk if I can. We'll see.

You might want to try the 280 grain swifts I have heard good things about them and I may try them out soon. But you can't go wrong with those 300's. I use the 325's for my 454 casull and do they work wonders on caribou and moose. Although I really like the 360 grain gaschecks for moose and bear, just because of the amazing penetration.
