Best Place to move in Wyoming, Utah or Montana

Hello,
Me and my dad are currently planning on moving to one of these three states in the next couple months and we were just trying to find some towns that have good hunting near them. We like the mountain areas the most but are open to anything. I have been hearing about the beartooth mountains is that a good place. We kinda like more rural places so we can have hunting in fishing as close as possible to where we live because that is mostly all we like to do Big smile I also wouldnt mind having a couple places i could run a trap line if thats possible.

Well if any body knows in areas for us to check out then that would be great. Also if anyone knows of a website that would have any house rentals that would be cool.
Thanks,
Gaston

I live in Idaho and have visited the states you are looking to move to many times. There is some extremely beautiful country out there. My wife is actually from Buffalo, WY. I think that would be my choice. It sets right at the base of the Bighorn mountains.

Good luck choosing.

yeah thanks ill check that out. But im starting to think more about south western montana like in big timber, Absarokee, Red lodge and those areas. If anybody thinks that area would not suit my needs i would really like to know since i havent had the pleasure of ever going to that area. Also is there good hunting there. I heard that Big Timber had quite a few lions and im looking forward to trying to hunt them.
Thank You

Coyotehunter, there needs to be more information before one can answer your question. However, the one state you will want to rule out right away is Utah. I lived there for 17 long years and unless you are exceptionally lucky at drawing tags the hunting there sucks! Oh and btw, the odds of drawing are VERY POOR.

What do you and your dad expect to do for work? What housing price range are you looking for? What animals do you want to hunt the most?

sometimes it is cheaper to drive to a place to hunt than it is to move there. employment year around is not the best and the winters are long and cold.
the old addage applies here...."a nice place to visit but not to live year around"
just a thought for you..............

My dad does his work out of the house and we're looking for places up to 1500 a month for rent. We want to hunt elk, mountain lion, and bear the most. But I would also like to trap. We have mostly narrowed it down to the beartooth mountains. But we still havent made our decision yet so any input would be greatly appreciated.
thank you

Housing is expensive anywhere in or around Bozeman or Big Sky. If you want to hunt all those animals you listed and want more reasonable housing try Dillon is the southwest corner. However, it is a small town and if you can't entertain yourself you might not like it there. Then again most of the places in Wyoming are small towns as well. Of the the three states you listed Montana probably has the most bang for your buck.

Just curious, what is it that your dad can do from home that would allow him to live in western Montana?

he gets on the phone and gets companies like pepsi, honda, etc etc. to sponser different events like the grammies, concerts, and other corprate stuff. I dont know his job sounds really boring to me. Id rather be a rancher or a hunting guide or something you do outside thats why he wants to move me here. Is cooke city a good city to live in? oh yeah we have lived in small mountain towns before and it is not a problem.
Thank you

I don't know anything about Cooke City except it's a tourist town. If I could live anywhere in Montana I would look really hard at Lewistown (straight north of Billings). It is a beautiful city and close to some of the best hunting and fishing this state has to offer. Plus it the geographic center of the state. You will find that the best antelope, deer (mule deer and whitetail), turkey, and upland game bird hunting is generally on the eastern side of Montana. The bear, elk, and lion hunting is better on the western side. If you are in Lewistown you can access the best of both worlds. On top of that Lewistown is near some of the best bowhunting for elk anywhere they are hunted and some very good black bear hunting as well. They have a great school system there and it's close enough to Billings to get anything you might need. Anyway that's where I'd live if I could pick up and go anywhere.

actually anywhere in Mt is good for trophy deer, the new state record MD was killed last year on the rockie mtn front in the eastern half of the state and the North east corner of the state has the highest number of BIG Wt i have seen. The elk populations are at a high point and there is lots of public land to hunt,2 wilderness areas that open for elk/rifle on sept 15 every year!! Thumbs up
