best over the counter rifle?

Has anyone ever been to that site http://www.gunsandammo.com ? I was just there looking at 30-30's and I saw one for 97.50 in almost perfect condition only 50 rounds fired with scope and sling. Sounds a little odd to me. Any reasons why it would be so cheap? Also it was I think a Marlin which is most of the time more expensive than Winchesters. So...

Re Turkey hunting. A 12ga is pretty hard to beat and can be used in almost all shotgunning applications. They do kick more but that goes with the territory and with proper practice you'll be fine.

I'll say again though - I don't know anything about turkey hunting but it's hard to go wrong with a 12ga if you know how to handle the recoil.

A 10 gauge is larger than the 12 gauge but the 12 gauge is your all-around shotgun that is probable good for just about anything. The 10 ga. is a great turkey and waterfowl gun but has little use for any other game. The shells are expensive as well. If you have the $$$ then buy a 10 for turkey and a 12 for the rest but a 12 ga. "super magnum" will give you the choice between 2.75, 3, and 3.5" shells and the ammo is inexpensive(with the exception of the 3.5" stuff)

The problem with scopes is that you get what you pay for. They all work fine in good conditions but when it's rainy/foggy/cold that the extra bucks you spent pay off. Cheap scopes will likely fog up. Check into Bushnell's line. I've heard good things about their "RAINGUARD" system. More expensive but worth it when it counts. It sounds around 3X would be what you're looking for. Check out http://www.bushnells.com. Lots of good info on choosing a scope there.

I can't help you with the ammo. I'm from Canada and $15/box sounds like the cheapest we'd pay for off the shelf ammo(after you convert from US to Cdn money - the going rate here is about $18/box Cdn).

Check with a local gun club/range to see if there's anyone who would handload for you. It's probably cheaper.

Personally, I wouldn't scope your 30/30 lever action. With that round and shots relatively close (100-150 yds.) a scope may just slow you down. That is a great bush gun and a scope ruins that. Use the extra money and buy more ammo. I find the remington ammo. a bit more expensive than the winchester brand. JMHO

I'd have to agree with Chester. I have a winchester 30-30 no scope and do just fine without a scope. Also its a top ejection and you would have to side mount the scope. Take the money but ammo and spend time at the range. Have fun the more you shoot the better shot you will become you won't need a scope.
