I just bought a Thompson Contender G2 with a 14" barrel in .44 mag. I bought it to use for deer and I am trying to figure out the best type of holster for carrying it all day in the field. In Illinois it is cold during gun season so you can count on having to wear a heavy jacket/bib. There is no concealed carry allowed here so it has to fit over the heavy coat. I generally hunt from a tree stand and I want to be able to reach for my gun while sitting. Also I wear a Hunter Safety System vest which complicates things. Anybody have any suggestions, ideally based on personal experience, about the best way to carry a very large pistol in the field in cold weather? Thanks!

I have been using a Thompson
I have been using a Thompson Center shoulder holster for years now. If needed it can be adjusted to where you can wear it over a coat or jacket but you would need to be able to get to a belt since that is where it is anchored on each side of your body.

Uncle Mikes also makes a bandolier style holster that goes up over you head and then crosses over your chest.

I have also seen a couple with a sling on then that go from the grip cap to the forearm attachment screws but I have no idea on where to get one.

They actually have that system on thier site as well. It doesn't offer any protection but might be a solution if your belt is covered and can't use anything else.
