Best chance for elk in Colorado Unit 40

I've been saving up the pref. points for quite a while, and now am in position to apply. Been having trouble deciding between archery in 76 or muzzleloader in 40, but I'm leaning toward 40. I'm willing and able to work my butt off to get to where the elk are, and I've done quite a bit of research, including going though all of the great information and advice from all of you here. But still have some questions...

First of all, in Unit 40 in September during the rut, are there actually any decent elk in the steep southern BLM land along Unaweep Canyon, or would I be better off trying dealing with the crowd in the N.F.? Seems like there would be less pressure in the BLM, but the elk population maps seem to show southern BLM as only a corridor between summer and winter range? Or is there a different part of the unit that I should be focusing on?

Thanks a lot in advance for any advice!

Jeff

Jeff,

Welcome to BGH!

Are a resident or a nonresident?

Yes there are good elk on the south side of unit 40. Are they tough to hunt, yes. Most of it is difficult to get into and to hunt. PM me if you have more specific questions.
