Best Caliber for 70%Deer, 30% Moose & Elk???

I think I have narrowed it down to the following:
270 Win - Smallest of all - Not sure about effectiveness on the bigger game mentioned
270WSM - Seems to be a popular choice, although not much option for Bullet weights
7MM Rem Mag - A little more powerfull..., Good weight options... Maybe the one I am leaning towards
300RUM - Good weight options... Looks like one can dial up or down depending on what is being hunted....

Most shots will be taken under 200 yards.... Recoil is a concern, but not a deciding factor... Main concern is having the right caliber for what I am shooting.... Any thoughts from those who have shot the mentioned calibers? I am somewhat new to hunting & any suggestions and reasons why are greatly appreciated. Thank you....

I know out there moose get a little bigger then here on the east coast where 800-900lbs is probably average for bulls, that said theres no reason that the .270's or 7mm wouldn't do the job everytime so long as you do and as far as deer are concerned they get the job done with authority. If your concerned about recoil then the .300 magnums should probably be avoided. In my opinion for someone with requirements you've stated a standard cartridge would be best. this gives you plenty of options the . 30-06 and its family springs to mind; .270, .280 and .35whelan. Theres also the mauser cartridges(you may have to handload to get the optimum results) 7mm, 8mm, 9.3mm. The .338 federal gives excellent preformance and its recoils is on par with a .30-06 loaded with 200gr bullets. The .358 win would make an excellent all around cartridge. All of the above are perfectly capable of moose and elk at less then 300 yards and more then necessary for most deer.
My point being that if your looking for a all around big game cartridge and are recoil shy and won't be shooting past 200 yards you've got many options before settling on a magnum.
Sorry about going off from what you asked for just wanted to make sure you'd looked at all of your options. And to remind you that the .30-06 is IMHO a better gun under 250 yards for moose and elk the the 7mm magnum

Given the 200 yard maximum range, any of the 4 would do the trick. The .300 RUM is certainly not required unless you want one. The 7mm mag. offers more versatility with the heavier bullets in the 160 - 175 grain range for moose and elk over the two .270 cartridges.

Having said that I have killed an awful lot of moose and elk over the years with a .270 Winchester and the old 06. Some a good deal further than 200 yards. I think Jim Muir is right on the money and for your described uses there is no real need for a Magnum......the standard cartridges will work fine.

I'd think about a .270 Winchester, .280 or .30-06 and if you want to add a little spice to to the equation and you handload go for the .280 AI. Nosler factory brass and loads are available for it now and the ballistics are very close to the 7mm Rem. Mag.

Of the calibres you listed - I'd go with the .270.

(Long term members will note Saskie's usual anti-magnum rant has been withheld lol )

HI ! WHY NOT OPT FOR A 280 REM OR THE BEST AROUND NON MAGNUM CARTRIDGE THE VERY VERY GOOD OLD 30-06 ? IN THE MAGS THE 7MM REM MAG IS A EXCELLENT ALL AROUND CHOICE ! THE 300 MAGS KICK HARD THE 300 RUM IS TERRIBLE FOR RECOIL WITH HOT LOADS ! THATS MY 5 CENTS WORTH SE YA ! BUBBA JIM

70% deer = .270 for me

We shoot both caribou and moose with handloaded .270 - within the yardage you talk about with respect to moose

...but, I have to agree...if you want to choose one caliber check out the 30.06

learn to shoot whatever caliber you decide on well and yer off to the races...

my 2 cents

as you haven't mentioned the big bears, I would say 30 06. Of course you could go for one of the 30 mags but not sure what your recoil tolerance is. Any way you look at it, with the animals your asking about, you can't lose with an 06.

270 is good, but i am a huge fan of the 30 calibers. if you want low recoil, but decent hitting power the cliched 30 06 is great, such a wide range in available loads too. dont under estimate the 308 either though. its only a stutter step behind the 30 06 in a few aspects. i own one, and its taken deer, a huge 53 inch moose(among some smaller ones), and black bears, with out needing a follow up shot. shot placement is key no matter what you choose, so pick one, and practice with it as much as possible, so you know what it can do then you will have utter confidence in yourself and your set up.

The 270 is a great and often misunderstood calibre. If your shot placement is good then it will do a number on any of the game you listed. If your shot placement is poor then none of the other calibres will help you. Practice, practice, practice and it will do all you need at that range.

With the calbers you have listed , the 7MM Rem Mag would be my choice. Bullet weight is good and they are good for deer and moose. Try a Barnes TTSX bullet for both species , i don't think you will be dissappointed. Good Luck

the caliber your looking for is the great all-round 338 fed. lots of bullet weights to choose from, and it wont remove your shoulder like the 300rum your looking at.
