The best Caliber?

I was just reading some old posts and noticed a pattern. I will expand on this further in a moment. I want to preface what I'm getting ready to say by saying that I'm just as guilty as anyone. So before you get upset and think that I'm picking on anyone I'm stating that I'm not.

So heres what I noticed: There seems to be an abundance of threads that start out as a question about one certain caliber. Ie: Is my 270 enough gun to elk hunt with? etc. Then I notice that quite a few of us jump in and tell them that their gun isn't as good as our guns. ie. Your 270 isn't nearly as good as my 30-06 etc. Then someone will be reasonable and state that its enough with proper shot placement. etc.

This leads me to my hypothesis: I think when we talk about cartridges for other people, we are trying to justify our own decisions. Rather than making fair statements. I know that I have said to folks that my 280 rem is the best deer cartridge made. I've said that it is superior to the 270 win,& 30-06. Now this is most certainly my opinion but in no way a matter of fact. I think its easy to fall into the habit of running other calibers down to justify our choices rather than just admit that it is all a matter of choice.

When it all gets boiled down, most all centerfire rifles do the same thing. They propell a projectile at a target. Some are bigger, some are faster, some hit harder, some fly flatter. But heres the rub they all take proper bullet placement. To say that you can take less that ideal shots because you have a ultra mag is just unethical. It may or may not be fair to say that a larger caliber will drop game faster. But heres the rub, I've seen deer shot with a 300 win mag through the vitals that ran 100 yards or more. I've also deer shot with a 243 in the vitals that fell where they stood. Is that to say that one cal. is superior to the other? NO! They are both excellent rounds. They both do what they we're designed to do. Which would I or someone else prefer? I want both! I just might use them for different things. Then the question becomes; Which is best suited for your needs? Do the research and decide for yourself. If we get asked or opinions we should try to use facts rather than hyperbole.

There is an abundance of misleading info that could make it very confusing to a novice, high power rifle hunter. I get the feeling that most want to make sure that they have enough and/or not to much cartridge for the task at hand. Finding a rifle and cartridge combination that is suitable could get very expensive through trial and error. Most people don't have the funds to spend on trying to find a suitable combination.

Anyone, with experience in the field, knows the cartridges from 243win up will handle the deer critters but, a 338wm and up is over doing it.
Then one day they get the idea to chase after one of them big racked elk or maybe a sheep. Does this mean that they have to fight the wife for another gun because someone said that the 30-06 he paid good money for is questionable in performance for elk or to bulky to carry for sheep. When the truth is that a 30-06 bolt gun will handle anything he may encounter in the lower 48.

I've found that most novice shooters don't know where to go for the info. Gun shops want you to buy what they have in stock. Manufacturers want you to buy one of each.

My responsibility is to let others know what works for me and why. Nothing else matters.

Then there is the person that doesn't have a lick of experience in the field but, has dropped one of every critter walking. There's an example of giving some bad advice.

gotta go, back later

Excellent post shatodavis. I agree wholeheartedly! (I might have been one of the "reasonable" people you refered to, though that may be debated by some lol )

To the example you gave of big vs. little on deer, I have seen something similar. I have a buddy who had a 300 win mag and hunts only whitetails. Fine choice, he could shoot it well. He shot a nice buck at about 125 yds, and he chased it for 2 days and 3 miles. It was shot in the vitals, but due to whatever circumstances it didn't hit anything to cause immediate mortality. So, here's the point. He decided the 300 wasn't enough gun! Went and bought himself a 338 win mag! I razz him about that decision a lot. But really, it's fine because he shoots that gun well too.

Fuzzybear, you are right as well. Between the gun dealers, gun writers and gun manufacturers, the average newbie hunter would be hard pressed to make a good decision on their own. Without conscientious, experienced hunters that are willing to give good, somewhat unbiased info, it would be difficult indeed!

I couldn't stand the reduction in pay. Tongue in cheek.

Since you brought up politics: Heres a call to action

Senate bill S.397 is currently in the senate. It is important that we voice our opinions to our senators. Please review the bill at: http://www.nraila.com
http://www.nraila.org/stoprecklesslawsuits.aspx

then write, call, or email your senators and voice your opinions. Take action now at: http://www.capwiz.com/nra/mail/oneclick_compose/?alertid=6859271

Also, Tell you senators your feelings on the 50 cal. ban. I personally think that its rediculous and is a slippery slope that we need not mess with

The .50 ban is so godamned stupid i think it will kill itself. As far as your caliber discusion the sad truth is that there have been more deer killed on this continent with a .30-30 than any other rifle caliber and it is by byfar one of the worst shooting cartridges avaliable,so all of our arguments about fast, flat shooting cartridges really dont hold anywater at all when we try to make them sound required for ethical hunting.Do they give us a better chance of making a good shot at a longer distance?Yes.Do they make it easier for us to justify an extremly long shot?Yes.So they have thier drawbacks in the field just like the 30-30.Would I ever trade in my overconfidence building, irrationaly fast shooting, unbelievably flat shooting 7Mag for the safe and field proven 30-30?Hell no.In my opinion there are a handful of rifles that are great all around hunting rifles for N.America,i just happen to own a 7 mag becuase my father shot one for years and when I bought mmy first rifle I put the 30-06 he gave me on the rack and ive been shooting the 7 ever since. As an all around cartridge I would put it at the bottom of the list of ones that I would use on any game animal, moose, bear ect.I believe to 300 win mag and the 338 would bolth be better all around rifles but Im not about to submit myself to that kind of abuse everytime I go out to do some shootin.

Lack of action is unacceptable regardless of whether you think that the idea will kill itself or not. Politics and common sense rarely coincide together. Voice your opinions to your elected officials.

I hope your not implying that a Republican senate, AND house of reps, AND President won't pass any stupid laws. Don't look now, but they are doing it today!
