If you are going to buy over the counter ammo you cant do much better than Remington Core Lokts, for the deer I would use 150 gr. and for the larger game I would use 170 or 180 gr.They are very affordable and I used them for many years before i started to reload my own ammo,I have never had a single problem with this brand and the Core Lok bullets expand very well and stay together making them a very deadly bullet.

Since you stated that your intended quarry includes moose, caribou, and elk I would suggest Federal premium with either Nosler partition or Trophy bonded bear claws. I would suggest you use 180 gr. bullets. I'm not a big fan of mixing bullets in one rifle for different game. I think its best that you stick with one weight bullet. You learn how to shoot the gun with the ballistics that is has then when you move on to the bigger quarry there's no change. FYI the 180's are not too big for deer. Some will tell you otherwise, but I assure you that dead is dead. lol Federal premiums shoot excellent. They are on par with even the best handloads. I prefer to load my own, but if I couldn't I wouldn't hesitate to use premiums.

If you are willing to pay 2 or 3 times more for your ammo then the noslers are the way to go,the Remington ammo will kill any of these game animals juat as well for half the price,i assure you.

Well said, Nonya! Core Lokts will certainly do the job, but I like premium bullets and the expense isn't that much more considering how many rounds you shoot in the field.

Here's what I currently use in 30-06 for the game you inquired about:

White tail / Mule deer = Winchester Supreme 180-gr. Nosler Ballistic Silvertips or AccuBonds at 2,750 fps MV.

Elk = Federal Premium High Energy 180-gr. Nosler Partitions at 2,890 fps MV or Winchester Supreme 180-gr. AccuBonds at 2,750 fps MV.

Caribou = Winchester Supreme 180-gr. Nosler AccuBonds at 2,750 fps MV or Federal Premium 180-gr. Nosler Solid Base at 2,710 fps MV.

Moose = Federal Premium High Energy 180-gr. Nosler Partitions at 2,890 fps MV or Winchester Supreme 180-gr. AccuBonds at 2,750 fps MV.

In short, I use Premium ammo to hunt game with and the less expensive standard ammo to practice with. All with a 30-06.

P.S. Federal's High Energy 180-gr. 30-06 Trophy Bonded Bear Claw (TBBC) at 2,890 fps MV is also another outstanding round, but it's not very aerodynamic and loses energy quicker than other bullets.

Many rifles don't shoot TBBC's nor High Energy Partitions as well as Federal's standard Partition / TBBC at 2,700 fps MV.
