Best 4/6-12 X40 or 44 riffle scope for under $250-300...

As stated above, looking for something in the 4 or 6-12 power in either a 40 or 44 view for under $300, but prefer the lower the better. Something that is strong to handle the powerfull bullet. This will be going on my .300 Win Mag. The crappy 4-9X40 Simmons that came on it cant handle the shock and wont stay true.

Thanks for the help all,

Mav

I don't believe that you are going to find what you really need in that price range. The ones that I have seen in that price range you couldn't even get them to last through a sight in session with a magnum rifle, the cross hairs usually break or the optics break loose. So it is best that you stick with a name brand that has quality. Just a few of them are Leupold, Burris, Nikon, Cabela's Alaskan series, and or Bushnell for something a little bit above the price that you are looking for. I myself would stay away from the Tasco's and as you found out the Simmons Usually what I will do is go into a sporting goods store and check them out and find what I want. I then go shopping on the internet to find one for the cheapest that I can find. Some places that you can check are [url]Cabelas.com Cheaperthandirt.com Basspro.com along with a lot of others you can usually just Google the scope name and you'll get a lot of places that you can buy them.
I was told when I bought my first rifle myself forty years ago that the scope should cost as much as the rifle if you want a good one, that still is the case but there are some good ones out there that won't break the bank.

3-9x40 Leupold VXII bout $250.00-$300.00. Pick one and you never need to buy another. Best darned customer service on the planet. Plenty of power on a 300 wm for hunting. Best of luck.

I'd tend to agree that for hunting purposes, a scope with a top power of 9 or 10 is sufficient for most any big game hunting. A few other quality scopes I'd recommend to you with top powers of 9X are the very fine Bushnell Elite 3200 for about $200. and the even nicer 4200 3-9x40 at about $275-$300. The 4200 is a very high quality scope for the price.

I've had good luck with Burris FFII in 3-9x40 and Weaver's 2-10 and 3-9 scopes in their V-line are good values too. I've not owned one, but have read many good comments about Sightron SII series scopes too. The Leupold choices in VXII and similar series are good scopes as well.

Using $300 as a limit, I think you'll get a much better quality scope at 9 or 10X on top, than trying to go 12 or higher, IMHO. I understand not everyone has the same needs and preferences tho. I own a lot of scopes, and in my opinion the Bushnell Elite 4200 3-9x40 is the best value on the market in a big game hunting scope at under $300.
Good Luck.
