I'm heading to northeast CO on my annual elk hunt and I need a recommendation for a premium factory round for the .308 Winchester for elk. I bought one of my hunting buddies rifles from him last year but didn't have room to bring it home because I already had (2) guns with me. My primary gun is a .338 Win and my back-up is a .280 Rem. This year the .280 Mountain Rifle stays home so I can bring my .308 Remington 600 Mohawk home. This will be my back-up gun this year. I would like to find a premium .308 round with a good bullet. I like Partitions and it would be nice to find a Light Magnum or something like it with a premium bullet. Any suggestions? Keep in mind this rifle had a shorter barrel than most. I know I will need to limit my range with the .308.

About the Rem 600 in 308. I hunted for years with a guy who lived, worked and played in the woods and used nothing other than the 600 in 308 cal. I seen him shoot deer and moose at 400 yars with ease.
If he was mad at me I wouldn't want to be 450 yards away and doing this 
to him.
The shorter(18.5) inch barrel will affect veloxity a bit, but I wouldn't be too concerned.

I really bought the 600 for whitetail deer hunting. I've got two boys coming up and it would be a good gun for them someday. Plus, I get to use it 'til then. 
I've always liked the way those dogleg Remingtons look. The Mohawk is the cheesiest of the bunch, but the price was right.
My son took over my 600. I used it for years and what a great rifle. Mine was also a 308 but I never shot factory ammo in it. Matter of fact I haven't shot much of any kind of factory centerfire ammo in about 40yrs now. Not even a lot of RF. Found out I could shoot cast bullet's in handguns cheaper than buying 22 ammo. It has been the good fortune for countless rabbits and squirrel's as I'm a lousy shot with a handgun; keep that under your hat!

I have a set of neck-size only dies for my .280 but haven't used them yet. I've handloaded mostly .41 Rem Mag handgun ammo. I will probably get a set of dies for my .308 and .338 so I can shoot more often. I just joined a local sportsman's club and they have a pretty good range. I don't normally hunt with handloads, though. Not because I wouldn't trust them, I just don't reload much anymore. I just need to shoot more.
