Benzene = lawsuits!

Benzene is a solvent chemical, older cleaning solvents for firearms and certain car parts consisted of a nitrobenzene component, and this has since caused health problems. According to a website I stumbled across, people who develop these health problems can get free health care and maybe even money for pain and suffering. Conditions associated with this include lung and neurological disorders, lymphoma, both Hodgkin's and non-Hodgkin's, acute myelogenous leukemia, and skin cancer. It' similar to legalities regarding asbestos, the person has to prove their disease was related to exposure, which is a difficult and complex thing to determine. Fortunately, modern cleaning agents for firearms are unlikely to cause any of these problems as long as they are not misused.

I have been changing my vehicle oil for many years and during the course of changing my oil I get it on my skin which requires washing. Many components of vehicle oil are known carcinogens (heck, I probably even get trace amounts of benzene (or benzene derived chemicals) in vehicle oil).

Does this mean I can sue somebody?

While I'm not up on this benzene class action suit, I suspect that this is more about predatory lawyers suing to fill their pockets than about misuse of benzene (or helping people). I can't see how anyone can prove that trace exposure to benzene resulted in lymphoma in a cause-effect sense. In reality I suspect some one with one of these diseases (which I feel bad for because they are all terrible), calls the lawyers, the lawyers ask if they have ever been around compounds that have contained benzene, if they say "yes" then their name gets tacked on to a class action list.

Maybe I'm just a cynic, but this type of "justice" is rarely justice. The only winners are usually the lawyers.

Yeah, I'd have to say you're right, after all, about 60,000 people get NHL lymphoma, and another 30,000 get leukemia, yet tens of millions are exposed to chemicals. I thought about it and its more like lawyers trying to rob people that are gravely ill.

Don't get me wrong, there may be something to the lawsuit, I honestly don't know. However given prior class action lawsuits I suspect this may have to do more with $$$, then getting to the bottom of what causes these terrible diseases.

Here is a good piece about the Baycol suits.

Good depiction of the class action lawyer mentality.
