bedding ruger m77 7 mmmag

just beded a m77 and floated the barrel wondering if anyone else has done this and how did it come out .the barrel had a lip on the stock to kep pressure on the barrel i am still in the process of putting it back together . and i know lots of stories of these guns not being great shooters but i am going to give it my best.anyone know why they had pressure on the barrel it is a very thin barrel and never shot good once it got hot ..i am just starting to hand load so hopfully i can tune it in 2 B a good shooter

some times they put a pressure point on the barrel to dampen harmonics. Most of the time I like to also bed the first 2 inches of the barrel past the reciever just for extra support and free float the rest.
Let us know how it shoots.

A school of thought is that some upward pressure from the fore end will make the barrel a bit more accurate, especially in thin sporter barrels. The other idea is that the stock shouldn't touch the barrel at all.

I tend to follow the latter.

After bedding and opening the barrel channel (do the dollar bill test) you should see some improvement. If not, you can always reapply upward presure with a folded business card. If you have to use the card soak it with some oil first so it won't hold moisture.

BTW, the dollar bill test is to take dollar bill and fold it in half long ways. Then slide it betwen the barrel and channel. It shouldn't snag until you get to the receiver. This is with the action tightened to spec.

I'm in the ladder group too. I used computer paper folded several times and it has to slide. The main thing is to keep the barrel from touching wood when it fires. I also used to bed under the chamber but don't any more. That line across the stock is not real straight and it won't shoot. Now it's all the way to the reciever.

I had an older m77 varmint in 6mm rem (wood w/ heavy barrel) that shot quite well once the barrel was free floated. While I have personally never messed with the "touching at the tip" form of bedding, I suspect it might help some rifles and might actually make it worse for others. Actually determining whether it would help, hurt, or make no difference at all beforehand would require a level of harmonic analysis beyond what most would call recreation.

Maddog, I used to be stationed at FE Warren. Great place for hunting!! Also, I bedded my Ruger m77 25-06 while I was there. When I bought it, it wouldn't shoot better than 2" @ 100 yds. Now, it shoots sub MOA, it was definately worth it. It's still a little finicky with certain loads/bullets, but for the most part, it holds it own at the range. I assume since you have a 7mm you'll be going Elk hunting while there, you won't have to go far to find some great spots just west of you, about 2 1/2 - 3 hrs. Enjoy.
