Bears only at night

Hello, I'm glad I found this site. What excellent advice. I'm hoping to get some more advice.

We have had our bait setup and running for about 4 weeks now. Bears are hitting it every night, starting at about 9:15pm-4:00am every day. We have pictures of at least three different bears. Usually all three visit every night, and we are having to restock our barrel daily.

We have at in our stand about 4 times now, starting about about 6:00pm, and staying till it's completely dark. We have yet to see this bear that shows up between 9:15pm and 10:30pm. Perhaps he is smelling us, or spotting us, hearing us, who knows. The nights we sit, he will come in about an hour after we have left. The nights we don't sit, he comes in the 9:15-10:30 range.

And to make things more complicated now, yesterday I had refilled the barrel at 3:00pm, and by 7:00pm they had hit it and eaten most of it. They have never hit the bait before in the daylight. (I didn't get pictures either because I forgot more film, that's why I went back at 7:00)

So I'm hoping to hear some comments/advice on what a good next step would be. Should I continue to sit until dark every night hoping he comes in early? Is there a way to get them to come in earlier, or maybe get them to start coming in the morning? Do you suppose they are close and know when we are there, and listen for us to leave, and won't come in until they do?

Thanks all! Two of these are close to 300+!!

Hi porkapatamus

Your are dealing with few , probably smart boars .

but before we confirm this theory I need to know few things from You so we could use the right steps for these bears !

first of all to comment on ur post :
the bears are seeing You,, smelling You and hearing You no doubt in my mind and that my friend is a good thing ! (sometimes )

You see once bears find plenty of food they never leave the area until there is no more food available for them to eat, in a baiting site situation we do what we do to keep the bears close so they never have to go look for food, we keep adding food for them to stay, so usualy the bears will hear You, see You, and smell You everytime You enter the bait site and the same thing when You leave! the bears my friend are within 50 to 100 yards of ur bait when You come to add food for them.

Now why bears coming to ur site late while You are there waiting ? and in one case around 7 because that was the only time You were not there, is simple to answer that,, the bears know You are still there ! NOW THAT IS NOT GOOD.

we can fix this problem in few ways but first let's find out why they are not coming when You are there !

answer these questions for Me so I can help You solve this problem. but be quick to reply because I am leaving on monday not coming back until saturday.

1- Is this a new baiting site? ( I think it is )
2- are You using any scent block ?
3- where is Your tree stand located ? distance, height, ?
4- have You checked the trail the bears using when they come in to feed ? if You haven't done that yet go check and come tell Me .
5- at what time Your are adding fresh baits to Your site ?
6- are You a smoker? or someone helping You smokes ? if so are You guys smoking in ur truck on the way to ur bait site ? how about at home , like girlfriend ,kids, wife?
7- are You adding fresh bait the same time everytime or it deppends ?

answer these questions for me please so I can get a better idea of why this is happening to You and We go from there.

Have a friend come in with you to bait. You climb a different tree than you usually hunt from and stay concealed, when the other hunter leaves hopefully the bear will come to the bait thinking you are gone. He will check your tree stand to see if you are there too.
Theres my generic answer......I'm looking forward to hearing HoTm00n's answer more!

I agree with hunter777 take a friend and have him leave like normal and you go in a different tree the usual. Also I had read about scenting the area, the easiest way to do this is cut the arms and most of a shirt off and wear the shoulder and neck area under your clothes for a couple days. Then cut it up and place it around the bait site. Keep doing this every time you refill the bait. We have done this with a couple of smart bears and it appears to work. Also I have heard about using a battery powered radio with a timer. You set it to go off a couple or just once during the night when the bears are hitting the site. It disrups there normal behavior. hope this helps and after you answer the questions by hotmoon. we might be able to answer you more directly.

Hi HotM00n, here are the answers to your questions:

1- Is this a new baiting site? ( I think it is )
-This site was going all last year during the spring, slower in the summer, and fall. We started stocking it again this spring.

2- are You using any scent block ?
-No scent block, but we always go when there is a breeze to put us downwind of where they are usually coming from. (maybe this isn't sufficient)

3- where is Your tree stand located ? distance, hight, ?
-We have two tree stands, both in trees about 15 feet high, and the trunks of these trees are about 20-30 feet from the bait barrel

4- have You checked the trail the bears are using when they come in to feed ? if You haven't done that yet go check and come tell Me .
-The trails they seem to be using are beaten pretty good, and we've found all sorts of tracks. Nothing in the way of poop or such yet. Should I be looking for something specific?

5- at what time Your are adding fresh baits to Your site ?
-We are trying to get there every day, and the time is usually around 2:00pm-4:00pm. One thing I did think of last night, for the first couple of weeks we had been using our ATV's because of the snow/mud situation. The first time they hit during the day was the first time I drove my truck all the way in instead.

6- are You a smoker? or someone helping You smokes ? if so are You guys smoking in ur truck on the way to ur bait site ? how about at home , like girlfriend ,kids, wife?
-No smoke anywhere

7- are You adding fresh bait the same time everytime or it deppends ?
-It's not exactly the same time every day, but always afternoon sometime.

We went up again last night, and it looked like our bait had not even been touched overnight after that first daylight hit between 4:00-7:00pm. Needless to say we didn't see any bears while in our stands again last night. Another thought is that Friday (the day they hit in the daylight) was the first time the area has been heavily camped. This maybe has thrown them off schedule.

Thanks!

Hi Porkapatamus.

Glad you quickly responded cause I was about to leave home for my spot and stalk hunting trip

You should never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever bait after 12 noon !! should I say it more or You got the idea ?

I think the PROBLEM is solved but You still have few work to do.

When I bait I never bait after 12 noon. the earlier the better, I usualy bait around 7-8 in the morning do a honey burn then bacon burn and then ready for my hunt, some ppl don't bait on the day they are hunting and some do , You can try both and see which one work best for Your bears.

Your bears are coming late because You are baiting late. now there could be more to it this then, later i will tell You what to di in case baiting in the morning still not working and bears still coming at night.

You mentioned a camping ground near the baiting site!? well this could play a part in the nocturnal behavior of the bears or there is lots of leftover for the bears to eat after campers are gone. Anyhow it's easy to fix .

You also mentoined tthat this is the second year baiting in there, I don't know if u got any hits last year or not but in case U didn't and this year is the first year bears hiting then it is still considered as a new baiting site,, therefore the bears this year are weery and nervous to come during the day, next year will be easier for You and for bears , once You start baiting early morning and the bear are still coming at night then You do different things which I will explain it to You later in this post, but for now i recommend You bait early morning instead of late afternoon.

now here is what You should do as soon as You read this post :

buy these:
Liquid smoke ( Hickory flavore )
Anise oil
Small radio that runs on batteries
flash light

1- You go to Your baiting site and walk to where all the campers were camping and look for any left overs and food left behind and u either destroy it or bring it to ur baiting site ( no competition is allowed near ur baiting site ) those bears may 've been going there the last 2 days feeding on any leftovers. so it is worth to check it out. I also recommend You walk in all direction of ur bait and see if there is any kills near by and while doing this step in grease and advertise ur site while checking for food or leftover and if u like u can also spray blood or stinky fish juice on trees as well,, We do this to help spreading the smell, since u got some bears hiting ur bait u don't have to do it but it sure help get more bears .!

2- soon after that You add fresh bait not later then 9 oclock (earlier the better for now until we fix the problem) sing or talk on ur way to ur site and while U r there.

3- keep using the same baits You been using cause it seems bears like it , do not change anything , if u feel u wanna add few more things it's entirely up to you.

4- if u decide to add liqiid smoke and anise oil then spray the liquid smoke and anise oil on rags and hang them high on trees , do this everytime You enter Your site. if u don't wanna spray liquid smoke and anise oil don't it's entirely up to you since bears like what u've been feeding them.

once You do all this for the first time LEAVE THE AREA DO NOT HUNT ON THAT FIRST TIME YOU DO THIS. Come back that same evening when it is almost time for You to leave the tree stand and go home and see if You got any hits, if u got hits come back the next day and go on ur tree stand and hunt , don't move while u r there. If You wanna add fresh baits before u go on ur tree stand is up to you. if no hits on that day do the next step.

if You checked the site on the first evening and u saw no hits then u turn the radio on and pick a channel that run for 24 hours none stop and u place the radio next to ur bait loud enough for u to hear it as far as 20-30 yards and then u turn the falsh light on and hang it from a tree onto ur bait and leave that night and come back the next morning and spray Yourself with scent block soon u walk out of ur truck , don't drive too close to ur site this time , add fresh bait, shut off the light and the radio ,go on ur tree stand and be quit all day and wait , if no hits during that do the same thing u did above before u leave ur site and repeat over and over again .

why we are doing this ? We are doing this to make the bears believe that ppl are near the bait during the night hours and the only time human are gone is during the day, the bears may not believe this the first day and may never believe it at all but the hunger will drive them to come and feed during the day .

next year u don't have to do this anymore because the bears will get use to this site and come as early as they wake up from hibernation, by then u will have more bears visiting ur site and some of these bears were on ur site the year before ( this year ).

when You see bears acting in movies or dogs play cute tricks on tv u think they do that because they are smart and were natural born actors,, You know this is not true right ? and You know that they do this because we FORCED THEM to do it , because we trick them to do it ,, the bears and dogs know if they jump they get their treats , the bears in ur baiting site will soon enough discover that to get to the tasty food u have ready for them they are gonna have to come during the day and feed cause night hours there is ppl ( radio ) there waiting for them.

when u work on ur site don't spray yourself with scent blocker, let the bear smell u , when u hunt spray yourself with it, it will increase ur chances of getting that big one u've been waiting for.
some ppl go the extra mile by hanging the clothe they wear for hunting in a tree not too far from the baiting site or on the stand when they leave and wear it when they come back to hunt, by doing this the clothes will smell the same as ur baiting site,, some place them in bags and leave them outside their house so the clothes don't smell weird,, like smoke or any parfume or cologne . they simply use these clothes for hunting andf hunting only , no weird or unnatural scent should be on them,, I do this only when there is a a brute in the woods that refuse to come out for any odd reason, and yes i was successfull after using this trick on few brute few years back.

If You decide to go the extra mile I garantee You success hunt, but yet again it's all up to you at the end.

let us know what happen I will be back this saturday and check this post !

good luck

Pork,
I have a bait site established for 5 yrs now and have it running pretty good.
One other thing that needs to be addressed is sows. If you have only boars on the bait the spring is when they are out looking for sows. Once you get a sow coming in it will help out and bring more boars in. the boars will be checking the site quite often for this sow for breeding. You also need to remember that the more bears you have hitting your bait your bait the more competition they will have over your bait. They will have to come in earlier to feed to get food.
There is also the fact you can put smaller amounts of bait out to make them have to come in earlier to get food. You can also if you have the time to get there often or daily you can put a lid on yourbait at night when you leave and open it up in the morning. Lets them know the food will only be available during day light hours only.
Couple more suggestions.
