Bear hunting time of day?

Hello!

First post here, I've been reading the forums for awhile now.

Son and I will be heading up to Vermont for our second year of bear hunting.  Last year we didn't get any, but had a fantastic time in the woods (first year hunting for anything!).

One thing we've noticed in a lot of the hunting videos we've been watching is that it seems like a lot of people get their bears in the afternoon.  Are bears more active in the afternoon than morning?  Last year we went out early to be in place at first light, then came back for lunch, then went out for a while in the afternoon.  Is it worth being out first thing in the morning?

Well, let me rephrase that:  It is always worth being out hunting at any time, but should we be making more of an effort in the afternoon?

Welcome to the forum!  You might have wanted to post this on the "Black Bear" section but since it is in VT I guess it can stay here also.

If you go Bbear hunting up north in Canada over bait, typicly you just hunt the afternoon.

In NY when I hunt them early season in the ADK's I am out on a watch near some natural food source before first light and I will hunt all day, sitting then still hunting then sitting.  I have never shot one at noon (yet) but I figgure I am 50/50 for morning and afternoon kills on bears here in NY.

Goods luck in the Green Mtn state.

In Vermont, as I understand it, baiting is a no-no.  Using dogs is carefully regulated, requiring special permits.

 

It sounds like your "NY" style of hunting is what my son and I will be doing.  We are very much looking forward to it... just one more week to go until the season starts!

Im new around here too but not new to bear hunting as I run a bear outfit in Ontario, butaaa previously said my hunts r 50/50 kill between early morning and evening hunts. But this is over bait and habits may differ in your situation.  I have a few trail cam pics up on my little web site to get youexcited about your hunt... Thanks for the replies everyone.  Son and I are leaving Friday afternoon for a weekend in the woods.  Weather looks like it will be perfect.  Here's hoping to post about a successful hunt!

 

P.S.  The moderately humorous thing about all this is, in my town is a black bear that the DEP may have to relocate or euthanize.  So here I am traveling 2 states away to hunt for bear...

Trail Cam pics

My Trail Cam pics are usually in the afternoon but it seems like they have no rhyme or reason just milling around from food source to food source. Just like hunting anything else the more time you spend in the woods the better your odds but I really don't know how optimize your time in the woods other than possibly a natural food source that seems to be frequently visited

Just got back, and no bear,

Just got back, and no bear, but... we still had a great time!  Twice we were pretty sure that we smelled bear, and both times it was in the afternoon.  We found some new spots that provide good over looks.  I am not sure when we'll be able to get out again, but hopefully a lot this fall!
