bear hunting questions

I just moved to the alaska interior and I'm new to hunting black bears and have a couple questions. First, I have two choices of gun to hunt with. Either a 7mm mag or a 12 gauge with slugs. Have heard both will work, but am looking for some more experienced opinions. Also, there are both grizzlies and black bears in my area, and my bait has been getting hit by the grizzlies. Will they keep the black bears away? Should I move to another location? Any advice would be appreciated.

Have no idea about the grizzly thing but as for the gun use the 7mag. Make sure you bust him threw the front shoulder. He will run but will be down. The shot will kick the adrenaline in and they will run. Good luck.
I would think with grizzlies there the blacks wont come in.

Forget the shotgun. Your 7mm is fine. Remember, its not the caliber that matters. A quality bullet, properly placed is always the answer. I killed a large inland Grizzly on the North Slope a few years ago and found my 7mm Weatherby to be the right medicine.
As far as grizzlies and Black bears go, they are not known for getting along. If possible a grizzly will kill every black bear found in its territory. They simply wont put up with that kind of competion.

I bow hunted black bear in Alaska nad used a shot gun as back up. Are you hunting over a bait or spot and stalk hunting? If your bait hunting I say use the shot gun at close range, that will put him down. I shot 2 black bear in 2 years from the same stand. 1 with my bow and 1 with my 300 win mag. I hunted up near Livingood and it was great. It is about a 80 mile drive north of Fairbanks but well worth it. I have some friends who still use that stand and have seen some nice black bears and a few Grizz. I say the shot gun, because if a grizz is coming at me at close range I want to nock him down now. good luck

its a proven guarentee where theres a grizz a black will run as far as possible and a black would not even fight a grizz for food even if he was starving so if you do have grizzlys around the chances of the blacks commin in is slim and i say the 7mm is your best choice they arent really the best guns for bear but hey they'll work dont use the 12 its too much risk and the bear has to be damn close dont get me wrong one shot with the 12 will drop the bear but in the wrong spot the bear will run far and if your near grizz's your better off with the 12 on your side and the 7 in your hands with quite a bit of ammo

Atom you said that the 7mag is not the best gun for Bears? What did you mean by that? Not enough power or to much? Was just wondering as I might have misunderstood what you wrote.
