baiting

Minnesota baiting starts this weekend. Do not plan on hunting until the September 2nd. Should I wait another week before starting to bait or start this weekend. I don't want to start too soon but than I again I don't want to start too late.

What is the best time of the day to bait?

Should we bait every day or every couple of days?

Would like to hear some opinions of some minnsota bear hunters. We hunt in Northern Minnesota by Canadian border.

Thanks - look forward to some comments.

If you really want to go full bore on baitng pick up a copy of Dr Ken Nordbergs book DIY black bear baiting and hunting. I bought the book 2 years ago and I still read it actully just put it down to check E-mail! I use some of his techniques I like the part when he says black bears don't eat people!!

I have the book - its great. Although he says to bait every few days. so kind of torn whether to bait every day or every other day. I think we are going to give it a try with baiting three to four times a week and see how that goes. Also going to only bait between 12:00 and 2:oo PM to see if that helps bring the bear in doing shooting hours. For the last three years its been coming late at night although we were baiting between 5:30 and 6:00 PM so am wondering if that was the probelm for it coming during late evening hours/early morning hours. since we are going to bait during the 12:00 to 2:00 mark thats why we can only bait a few times as we work. Going to shoot for Friday, Sunday and Tuesdays and hopefully that will work. Plan on starting baiting this Friday. We are going to try the grain/.sugar/water mix and see how that goes, also have a few meat scraps (hard to come by), bread, pudding and honey.

Any other advice would be helpful!

Do you bait on the day that you plan to go out and hunt? Also what time do you go out and sit in the stand? Any info would be helpful! Went out last weekend to get things read and there was bear droppings close to the place where our bait pile/stand is so hopefully thats a good sign.

Have a good hunt.

One risk you run by baiting more often is spooking a bear while its on your bait site. If its a yearling you spook, it will probably return to the site, but I guarantee you that if there is a large boar on the bait pile when you come in to restock the bait, that bear will go nocturnal and you will never see him again during daylight. At most, you should bait twice a week and if you can haul in enough bait do it only once a week. The less you disturb your bait site/hunting stand area the more comfortable the bears will be in appraching it while there is still daylight. Its tempting to go in more often, but if you can haul in around 150 lbs of bait each time, you should be able to get by with baiting once a week. Otherwise the only bears you will probably see are going to be yearlings and sub-adults. Good luck.

thanks for the infor Milliondollarbear. I was kind of thinking about the same thing about going in there every day and baiting early evening. Hoping going to early afternoon and then twice a week will do the trick and will help us get a bear this year. Do you suggest baiting on the first day we go out to hunt, I actually bati for someone and they do the hunting - figure the two man approach of me going in and baiting while the other guy goes to his stand. What do you think?

If you can work it to bait the day before the opener I'd do it that way. My experience tells me that on the day that you go in to your site and refill the bait crib, the only bears you will see during daylight hours are going to be small yearlings and sub-adults. The dominant boar in the area will hear you re-stocking the bait and will wait until well after dark to approach the bait safely. If you can bait one day and walk in quietly to your stand to hunt the following day, you stand a much better chance of getting a look at the big guy in your part of the woods. I have used the two man approach.....going in to bait with a helper and after restocking the bait, one goes on stand while the other makes plenty of noise leaving the bait site. I have had young bears show up within 20-30 minutes after my partner left the area. Its a good way to see bears, but the bigger trophy sized bruins are usually hesitant to come in until things have settled down for several hours and by then its usually dark. One evening two seasons ago, I climbed up into my stand after helping fill the bait crib and a half-hour later I watched two yearlings nearly trip over each other to get to the bait. Their paws were small enough to be able to slip between the crib's covering logs and steal a doughnut or two, but they weren't strong enough to pull the logs off to open the crib. While I was watching them fight over jelly doughnuts, I caught a glimpse of a very large bear moving thru the thick brush about 40 yds downwind of the bait site. He let out a couple of deep woofs and scared the yearlings off the pile. I sat motionless for another 4 hours hoping the big guy would decide to show himself, but no luck. Dark came and I headed in for the evening. When I left at dark the logs covering the bait crib were all in place. I came back at 7:30 am and the crib had been torn apart like a tornado had hit it. The following weekend, I baited on Friday morning but didn't hunt until Saturday. That day, about a half hour before dusk, I saw the same bear circling the bait site about 30 yds out. The brush where I hunt is very thick and I could only catch an occasional glimpse of him moving to circle the bait. Then he disappeared. I thought I'd screwed up again, until just at dusk he came out of nowhere and started pulling the covering logs off the crib. The covering logs I use are 6 foot lengths of oak and maple and weigh at least 200 lbs each. He threw them off the bait pile like they were lincoln logs. I watched him long enough to give me a good quartering away shot and then took my shot. His rug is hanging on the wall of my den right now. He measured 7 feet nose to tail and weighed in at 520 lbs. Since then, I make a practice of baiting one day and hunting the next 2 or 3 days without making any attempts to re-stock bait in between. Good luck!!

Thanks for the reply. I really enjoy all the feed back that I am getting and all the information. There is alot of information out there from hunters and this is a nice way to get it.

Like I said, I bait for my brother who comes up from westcentral MN to up here in Northern Minnesota. He has been coming up for three years, this the fourth, hoping he gets one this year. A group of four come up and the rest have gotten there. My brother is retired due to medical reasons, still young at 43, and about the only thing he can do is hunt and so hoping this is his year!

Appreciate any more info anyone can give me! the more information the better.

good luck hunting to all of you!

I hunt in Idaho. I have posted quite abit as others here with very valuable info. All areas seem to be different it seems. I have baited twice a week and have baited once a week. I took my bear this year when I went in to restock the bait site. He was on the bait in the middle of the day. So made a decision to take him. A good bear. My 12 yr old son also took a nice bear off the same bait site 12 days later. I stock the bait site to the hilt. What i take up I drop regardless if hit or not. I also use grease for scent and for the bears to get on there paws to drag down the trails for the other bears to follow back to dinner. I try new things every year as I have a friend that has baited for 20+ yrs who gives me all the info I want on bears. His bait site is also established for that same time. His area is very heavy wooded in Northern Idaho. I bait in the southern Idaho and the bears act the same here. Dominant bears will come in later as said. I also dont care how much scent I put out. I track up there trails to leave scent so they get used to my scent. I also put a old shirt that I have worn on a tree by the bait site. When I am sitting my bait site the bears if they get a whiff of me they might just think I put fresh stuff out. But each hunter is different it seems on not leaving scent to leaviing it. I also use a trail cam. I had a good bear come in right after it heard me leave. Also i do piss all over my bait site so the small predators will stay away from the bait site. Does not work on all of them but enough of them.
Look threw the old posts on here and read as there has also been past posts of great knowledge.
Good luck and happy hunting.
