Bait Coyotes?

First time this year I'm going to hunt for coyote in PA. I read the rules and regulations and we are allowed to bait coyotes in PA.
I don't feel like wasting all that money on buying callers, so I was wondering if anyone had any luck baiting them?

I though I didn't have them in my area until a couple of days ago we had 2 deer hanging outside the house, when we woke up to go hunting we spooked a coyote about 50 yards from the house.

I'm going to start hunting them late January in the heavy winter. What would you guys recommend for bait?

Gut piles will not be available at that time.

I'm going to give the yotes a try after deer season is over,I'm saving all the scraps from the deer I butcher in the freezer,I'm putting the scraps in a little wire cage so they can't just drag it away!

I'm new to this coyote baiting stuff so only know from what I have read on it and heard from others that do it. The coyotes won't typicaly eat the rotting carcasses or deer scraps now because there is still plenty of food available but they will come around to check out the smell. After the meat freezes and the food becomes harder to come by, then they will come back because they remember where the bait pile is and eat it.....I'm thinking (hoping) that they will use this food scource late winter.

Ya ya I know they will all have a belly full of gut piles and deer that are'nt found.....I'm going to giv'm some time to get hungry. That's why you hunt the magpies while the yotes digesting.

Honestly, I think baiting coyotes is too time consuming to be worth it. The only thing I think it may be really good for is to attract them into the area so that they can be called in. As far as sitting on bait I wouldn't spend that much time on one or two coyotes. If you want to kill coyotes on a regular basis, invest in a call. It doesn't have to be expensive. Almost all of the work. The sound isn't as important as location, wind direction and technique.

I'm not planning to sit and wait for them. I was thinking that it would keep them in the area for calling them.

i currently know of hunters putting out deer scraps for coyotes. None have had any sign of coyotes coming into the bait yet, though it has been a mild winter up until this week.

Bait Coyotes?

been doing it seriously now for 10 yrs. i hunt over a farmers gut pile. fresh guts about once a week Thumbs up i use a ground blind set-up with a harris bipod on my 22-250, about 100 yards away . so far this winter i only got 4 dogs but its been very mild here so far with no snow barely at all. i've found over the yrs you need the snow. without the snow they dont have a hard time getting food. i find when the snow gets deep they use the gut piles alot more cause its easy for them.(makes sense right)i dont know why they dont come to guts all the time maybe they perfer fresh kill . and like i said there fresh guts once a week. hard to believe but it seems the more snow better for hunting over the gutpile. oh and by the way i have found that the temperature doesnt really matter much....BUT THE MORE SNOW THE BETTER. GOOD LUCK Thumbs up
