Bad Primers?

A couple of years ago I had some misfires in a rifle (two I believe) that both fired in the second attempt and since then I never had any problems with hard primers and never thought about it again. I just got a new rifle and did some handloads with new primers just out of the store and got multiple misfires!!! None of them fired on a second attempt and I even tried three times on one. Just about every third one was a complete dud!!! Since the rifle was new I didn't know if it was the rifle itself or bad components so I went to the gunsmith and he said don't even bring the rifle in the door because this is happening regularly. They have had regular cases of bad primers so often that he didn't bat an eye when I told him. I then switched to Federal primers and sure enough the rifle is just fine.

I am consumately clean and neat in my handloading practices and have never had a problem in over 25 years of loading. Anyone else experiencing this problem?

Primers that ignite on the second attempt is usually a primer seating problem, not being fully seated and the first time the firiring pins strikes it just fully seats the primer.
One can only guess how much abuse and neglect some components get prior to ending up on your loading bench, but if I ever got a defective primer, the remainder of the 1000 that I buy would be returned for refund and I would go elsewhere, at least I would not use primers with the same lot #.

Highflyer,
Can you tell us what brand the primers were that gave you problems?

It seems that ammo makers have had such a demand put on them lately, that it could be just corners being cut in order to get product out the door. Demands to meet military contarcts (some makers), coupled with the stockpiling frenzy resulting from the recent election, have greatly contributed to a large stress and demand placed on both arms and ammo makers.

It would be interesting to know who the maker of these defective primers were.

I hate to say the name out loud until I've xhausted all reasonable explanations. The guy at the store said the same thing: high demand has turned into bad quality.

I agree have seen a much higher failure rate in todays ammo than in years before.

Highflyer,
The reason I was interested to know who the maker of these defective primers is, is because I'm down to my last 2 packs and need to restock myself soon. The last batch I bought kept me going for the last 3 years. Since primers are the least expensive of all reloading components, these are what I stock pile up on when I buy components. Plus, last I checked primers are about the only thing still available locally where I live. Every store has been cleaned out of everything else. I use CCI primers, mainly large rifle magnum primers, and large pistol primers. Can you let me know if these are the bad one recently?
