Granted, I am not familiar with big elk country in Colorado and other parts, but I would say that in most cases, if you even get 1 mile off a road, you would eliminate 90% of the hunters out there.

Most guys want to hunt close to the road, for various reasons.  If you get in there, you would have a good shot.  At least that would be a good starting place.
