Back from Alaska

Well made it back but going home a few days. Will pit up a few more photos next week.

Files are to big. Will fix some at home and put them on next week. Got moose, caribou, red fox, grey wolf, dall sheep (long way off). Saw a silver fox but couldn't get it, damn!

Back from Alaska

I went to Fairbanks to deliver an RV trailer. May have another this summer. Costs in Canada are really high. Fuel @ $3.85 a gal in B.C. and $4.50 in the Yukon. Bought a hamburger, glass of water and piece of pie (no fries) in Watson Lake, Yukon and paid $15.73!

Country was beautiful and the road good. In fact this was the 6th trip up there for me and mostly new roads. Even the Cassiar was mostly paved and very good road. Last time I was up there River Crossing 3, gone now, to Dease Lake was 260 miles of gravel roads with wood bridges. Now mostly paved with concrete bridges. Got a photo of a short section of the old Cassiar. Got it but it won't fit, to big!

Bad time of year for animals, Antlers either shed of sheding and some animals out just long enough to start rubbing. First animals up north were buffalo. I heard about how big they are but nothing prepared me for that. All my previous trips were the Cassiar and went up the Al-Can this time. I'd bet that the bulls go 1800 to 2000 lbs, maybe more!

There were some pretty small Caribou in B.C. and their coats were raggrd. One young bull just getting new antlers and two small ones shedding. Huh, didn't rersize them this weekend.

As I was coming into Border City, Alaska, I saw a Red Fox laying off the side of the road. went into town, such as it is, and walked back about 1/2 mi and it was still there. Let me take several photos. Didn't resize it either! Oh, forgot, comming out of Whitehorse, I saw what looked like a black cat from a distence. turned out to be a Silver Fox, very rare and I couldn't get a photo.

Up between Tok and Delta Jct, Alaska there were lots of Snowshoe Hare's. I love those guys! Also saw a large bull Caribou in velvet up there but he was gone right now.

The only river photo I re-sized was the Pease River in B.C. Beautiful!!!

Saw one black wolf going up but it was go right now. But on the Cassiar going home I did get a shot of a Grey Wolf. Beautiful animal!

There were lot's of moose but all shed out with nubs on a few. Also sawots on Dall Sheep on Sheep Mt by Kluane Lk (Clu-wa-nee). Way up on the mountain so didn't get any real good stuff of them. Used a 500mm lense on my digital and you can tell what they are. Beautiful sight looking at them up there.

I saw lotsf black bears and two with cubs. Got shots of a few. Gonna make someone mad here but gonna say it anyway. I feel sorry for those that see only a target in the animals we hunt, they are missing so much! I really believe that people that don't love these animals should not be allowed to disgrase them by shooting them. We owe the our best effort and a bit more! Even the varmits and the preditors.

I'm gonna re-size more photos soon and will post some. Down load if you can and want to.

Don

Sounds like you had a wonderful trip! I've been to Alaska many time to hunt and fish, and have always wanted to drive up, taking about six weeks stopping to camp fish, and do a little hunting on the way. It isn't quite the same looking out the window of a jetliner 35000 feet up! sad

There's a good market for clean 4x4 trucks up there, I may buy one, with a good camper on it, and drive it up, and sell it, and fly back when the hunting season is over next year. I have friends in Illiamna, Kenai, Soldotna, Anchorage,Talketna, Fairbanks. that I've made over the years, and have always wanted to spend from break-up, to snowfly, in Alaska, but work prevented it. I've been retired for some time now, and the thought gets closer every time I read a post like your's!
Thumbs up

I don't see why your quote above, would make anyone angry! That is, anyone who is a true hunter. I've always found that hunters are the true lovers of wildlife, far more so than the control freaks that call themselves ANIMAL RIGHTS ACTIVISTS. Most know little more than how a poodle should be clipped, about animals, and in my experience, are a detrament to the long term renewable existance of all wildlife, not just game animals. sad

Again, nice trip, and looking forward to seeing more of your pictures!
