I had a farm up there a few years ago and any of the major creek bottoms that branch off the two upper areas of the lake are good. You can take a canoe up the creeks to get to isolated areas around the lake. The Dept. of Conservation plant food plots around both the Alanta CA and Long Branch CA. Here is a good link to for maps. http://mdcgis.mdc.mo.gov/website/statewidedoqqtruecolor/viewer.asp
I have friend in Sullivan Co. and they say Union Ridge is better and doesn't have the hunting pressure. The Alanta CA and Long Branch CA area is just close enough to KC and St. Louis they get alot of hunters during firearms season.
Let me start off by saying I am not a farmer.
I am a deer hunter and I do own a tractor and have all of the equipment - but that does not make you a farmer any more than standing in the garage makes you a car - well, you get the picture!
Having said that - and with most of my ineptitude fairly well hidden - I do think that buckwheat is one of the most under rated cover crops out there.
I say cover crop because I see mixed results as it relates to the deer eating the plants.
