Asking for advice/knowledge for a first time big game hunter

2012 will be my first year hunting, starting with big game. I didn't draw a tag and haven't recieved the list of leftovers yet. I'm interested in a leftover deer tag for unit 20. If I cant get a deer tag and/or its in a season I can't hunt I am interested in hunting elk OTC. Unit 511 is one I've heard good things about.

What OTC units do you like for elk?

I generally don't recommend units

I'll try to help you through the thought process for selecting your own OTC unit, but I'm curious what you've heard that was good about 511?  Have you looked at the hunter numbers and success rates there?  2nd season success averages around 10%, and last year was 6%.  You can do a lot better than that.

Did you draw the cow tag that you put in for there? And have you received the leftover draw letter or are you hoping on a leftover deer tag in August?

By the way, here's the draft management plan for E23, which includes 511.  You may want to read it all, then read all of the comments at the bottom before deciding to hunt there.

It may still be right for you if you live right near there and can get out and learn it, but notice how many guys have hunted that unit for many years and never kill an elk.

As for your left over tag

As for your left over tag list did you check the box that you wanted a left over tag?  They go on sale to the general public on July 10 so it sounds like you didn't check it.

Leftover app

were due on July 3rd, which I now realize I missed!!! I will have to wait now with everyine else until Aug!!! Probably just pick up a few class c licenses for doe whitetail , late in the year so I can just concentrate on my Bull tag on the Bosque! I only seen some PLO tags for 20 ( Private land Only ) available! Unit 18 has buck tags leftover and if you just want a buck, I think your chances are good there!!! Lots of people, but not too far from Denver!!!! Probably pick up a doe tag as well!!
